Wow John! Are you trying to lose weight, or is that just what you do to stay fit?

I walked Maya on Sunday and again today. I am going to try and shoot for that magic minimum of 3 exercise sessions per week that was recommended by my personal trainer, Es99.

Maya is about 70 years old in dog years, but she sets a brisk pace for an exercise-avoider such as myself. The route we typically take is a hilly loop of about a mile and a half.

I need to loose a little. When last measured, I was at 226, and I ought to be around 190 to 200. (however, none of it is going to come off of my legs which are already probably around 5% fat). My current goal is to get back to 210.

Both of you would walk Me into the ground Angela, I'm not sure which would hurt first, the lower back or My ruined left ankle...

You would have to build up slowly to it. Also, make sure you use a walking stick for support and if you can get an elastic ankle support that would be good. Even a gentle walk for a few minutes around the outside of your house everyday would be good.

The joint was ruined cause of surgery to install 3 titanium screws in My left leg, sometimes just standing will set off that ankle, so ankle support would most likely do nothing, I already use a cane, that doesn't help much, I'm 6'1" tall, have an extended abdomen that shifts My center of gravity and puts pressure on My spine. I'm regarded as severely disabled by the SSA, so I'm mostly a shut in due to a lack of income and nowhere to go, this will be this way until I'm 62 in 8 years, then I can file for Social Security to go along with My SSI benefits. I also have had OA(Osteoarthritis) since at least age 40...

However, the more exercise you can do without aggravating your ankle, the better off you will be. Can you do crunches? (lie on your back, and use your abdomen muscles to pull your shoulders off the floor? If you can, start with a set of ten (or work up to a set of ten if you cannot do ten to start). Once you can do one set of ten, try for two sets of ten with couple of minutes of break between.

I tend to walk most people into the ground. My extra weight is mostly in a spare tire that I really need to get rid of.

Weighed in today, (was supposed to be yesterday), at 278.6. 1.4 lbs down from last time; but, a total additional loss of 0.3 lbs... Total weight loss since 4-1-2014 = 13.4 lbs.

Ok GF, I put my thinking cap on.
First of, I think Eric will notice the less backing activity, namely the decadent chocolate cake. To rich for me.
So put me down for how ever many Calories it has and convert it to weight loss.
Pluto will always be a planet to me.

Ulibelle, that is hilarious!

Ok, an average frosted chocolate cake has 6078 calories, according to Calorie King. Divide this by 3500 calories and you get 1.736 lbs. I shall add your guess to the list of guesses.

So far we have Ol' Pookers noticing weight loss at:

Less than one pound - CeltTooth
1.74 lbs - Ulibelle
2.5 lbs - Vic
5 lbs - Chris S.
7 lbs - Anniet
10 lbs - Time Lord
14 lbs - Esme
35 lbs (...or in other words, NEVER!!!) - Monday
And Wiggo's hilarious guess that Eric will think that SOMETHING has changed, but that he will not know exactly what...

Saw the doctor today and got the results of the blood tests. Relatively good news was that I have type 2 diabeties and the level of bad things was in the low range and the immune system things were in the normal range. My insulin levels were also good.
Doctor just said I'm too fat. Dont need any medication at this stage and he was very happy with me losing some weight already. He was also happy with the walking I've done.
Ihave to go back in a month and see the diabetes educator and get put on a special program.

Once again thank you Angela and every one for the help and support. It makes me so proud to be part of the Seti@home community.

I'm not sure what type of program they have in mind for you, but having guidelines/rules to follow will help, I think.

Hopefully you're feeling better overall since you started eating better and exercising.

I am feeling better Gordon. I was worried that I would have the most severe case of diabetes any one has ever had so todays news was a relief. It's been very difficult giving up every single food that previousle brought pleasure to my life. Even if it did make me fat.
Just got back from my evening walk so that makes 14.5 km total for today. Going to kick back and watch The Lone Ranger on Blu-ray disc with no snacks and hopefully wont fall asleep half way through.

Monday, that is an excellent outcome!

I know I'm a latecomer to this thread, and I hope you don't mind the intrusion. I've read every post over the past two days, and it motivated me to such an extent that I've emerged from my self-imposed SETI forums exile.

I want to encourage all of you to stick with what you've embarked on. You've taken the first step towards a healthier and happier future.

Perhaps my story will inspire you a little bit. Twenty years ago (when I was young), I was a sedentary hell-raiser, probably a borderline alcoholic, and I smoked at least 20 Camel filters a day. I played the occasional bit of golf, but that was about it. (Most of my golf was played at the nineteenth hole, anyway.)

Then, in 1995, I stopped smoking. I had tried to quit many times, but after being dumped by a (smoking) girlfriend, I decided I couldn't feel much worse and went cold turkey. I've never had a puff since.

For the next few years, I tried a bit of social road running now and then, but it never took off. Then, in 1999, I discovered I was highly allergic to a range of foodstuffs, including most of the grains that are the staple of the Western diet: wheat (gasp!), corn, rye, buckwheat, as well as a few nuts and seafoods. I eliminated these from my diet forthwith, and my quality of life improved immediately - no more hayfever, skin irritations, or heartburn. As a result of these allergies, I seldom if ever eat takeaways, and there are no breads, pizzas, pastas, pies, cakes, breakfast cereals, or gravies in my diet. I now eat simple food: grilled meat, steamed vegetables, small quantities of rice and potatoes, and some fruits and nuts. Dessert is almost non-existent, and I avoid processed foods as far as possible. More recently, I've taken steps to reduce my sugar intake too. And it's fine!

Later that year, I started running more seriously. And the bug bit. (Those endorphins are like nicotine and sugar - they're addictive!) By then, I was drinking a lot less, and running with a hangover is not recommended anyway! I went on to complete my first half marathon in 2000, a full marathon in 2001, and I ran my first ultramarathon (of 50 km) on my 40th birthday in 2003. That was a training run for the 89 km Comrades Marathon that I completed in June 2003. It turned out that I had a bit more talent at road running than golf. I completed the Comrades Marathon in 7 hours 22 minutes, earning a prized silver medal.

I've remained an active, competitive runner ever since, and last year, when I turned 50, I managed to run a sub-3-hour marathon (something I last did in 2004) and I returned to run my second Comrades Marathon in June last year (not quite as quickly as last time, though.)

The point of all this is that I went from being an overweight, unfit, unhealthy and very unhappy slob to a slimmer, fitter, healthier, and very much happier person. I changed my lifestyle completely, and it was the best thing I ever did. You can too. You don't have to go to the extremes that I have, but you're on the right track. Keep it up. Do some research on nutrition and exercise, and read the labels on the food products before you buy them. (You are what you eat.) And listen to Esme (Es99) - her advice is on the button! :)

I've got more to say, but I'll save it for another day.

Yes, and if only I was as good as sticking to it as I am giving it!

There was cake last night. Lots of cake. I don't think the Wednesday morning gruelling work out was sufficient to deal with it. It appears that Angela's 1 lb of weight estimate for cake was pretty accurate :'(

Your husband and I will have to exchange recipes!

There is a small family gathering tomorrow night at my mother's house and I have been charged with bringing cake. I am making a sponge cake filled with raspberries and whipped cream. I thought about making angel food cake, but then I would end up with 12 unused egg yolks, which would be a fun but very fattening challenge for me. Oh the "plus" side (... "plus" being my new dress size if I eat a great deal of this dessert...) the cake will be enjoyed by seven people and the left-overs will stay at the home of the hostess. That should help with damage control... I hope.

@John Neale. Welcome to the thread John and thank you for sharing your great story. I quit smoking cold turkey in April 2009 with borderline emphysema and 50% lung capacity so running is out for me or other aerobic exercise. I have long empty days to fill so 4 hours of walking is not a problem. I could also ride one of my bicycles although after riding my Harley I might have to get some ape hangers for the treadlies first. :-)

Why are fresh figs so many calories!!! I thought I was being such a good little raccoon by eating fresh figs for a snack today, then I went and looked up the calories so I could record them in my food log. Holy-moley!!! I should have just had a candy bar.
