The guy is a fruitcake and F'up but the Army knew this when they signed him up. The Army needed a few more good men because of Obama's massive troop buildup in Afghanistan. I think you might be wrong on that.I remember a big flap about a Gi who was accused of going over to the NVA in the late 60's who was released in the mid 70's. After the war had ended. The Private is on his way back to the US of A and is aware of his right to an attorney. I can see the Army wanting this over quickly as this is no longer about the Private but about how he got a waver to enlist in the Army after being washed out of the Coast Guard after 26 days. |

Several points of order 1 he is a Sgt, while a POW normal career advancement occurs and the army considered him a POW. 2 the enlistment standards are at least partially the result of mission impossible tasks. As an aside the VA scandal also has deep roots with the mission imposossible thing 3 when a country tries to do the impossible things go wrong, elect realists not ideolouges or worse those who pander to "the military industial complex" that Eisenhower warned us about. |

1 he is a Sgt, while a POW normal career advancement occurs and the army considered him a POW.I know why he is a sergeant but the Specialist doesn't want to be called Sergeant. During an Army press conference a general called Bergdahl "Specialist" one time, (Freudian slip?). Sergeant is an NCO rank; the Specialist knows he is a big time F-up and not deserving an NCO rank. Medical/general discharge, 100% disabled but no PX for life card. That means the Army wants nothing more to do with him, general discharge, and he is now the VA's problem. I think the waiting time for a VA appointment is eight months. |

And I hope the Army gets asked why he was let in, If in fact the Coast Guard did release him. Seems like some of you have already convicted him on hearsay eveidence. Lets hear the whole truth, Not sound bites. [/quote] Old James |

And I hope the Army gets asked why he was let in, If in fact the Coast Guard did release him.OK only the facts; the Coast Guard has confirmed the Specialist was washed out after only 26 days. Fact, the Specialist left the camp without his “sensitive gear†(rifle and night vision goggles). I’m 99 and 44/100% sure if the Specialist was captured and taken by the Taliban they would have taken the “sensitive gearâ€. He voluntarily left his weapon and walked away; no political reason necessary, guilty of being a F-up and a danger to the mission. So no parade and turned over to the VA for life. A side note; the mission to pick up the Specialist is a well-rehearsed standard operation. Notice the absence of visible weapons on the operatives or the Black Hawk Helicopter. The operatives were in radio contact with two old school “puff the magic dragons†circling above. |

'Puff the Magic Dragon' was in fact the AC-47, the original of what is known as the gunship. It got its' name from trail of red tracers, every 5th round, coming out of the night sky, which the Vietnamese said looked like the tongue of a dragon. We called that trail 'THE LONG ARM OF THE LAW'. There was also a modified C-119 Boxcar known as the AC-119 Stinger. The AC-130A was called 'Spectre' and were painted black, with the current version being the AC-130U. Originally the crews were all Air Commandos, predecessors of the current Spec Ops operators. The GIBs, Guys in Back' manning the weapons are not Special Operations personnel, but attached from the Material Airlift Command. The flight crew & sensors operators are from Special Operations. I don't buy computers, I build them!! |

I was confused as to why an Air Borne Infantryman would tip toe off without his weapon. Things are becoming clearer now; Bergdahl, wanted to be in the military thinking he would be helping people. The Coast Guard was a good choice as they usually don't shoot anyone. Bergdahl washed out in 26 days so something showed up quickly that made him unfit for duty. Fast forward two years and Infantrymen are need for Obama's troop build up in Afghanistan. A waver was offered to Bergdahl so he could join the Army but only for MOS 11B, that is a light weapons infantryman. As for why he was Air Borne, he said he was assigned to the unit and did not volunteer; so he was almost drafted. There are two movies in the works, you heard it hear first. |

Didn't he ask his superiors first if he could take his weapons with him when he wanted to go for a walk off base, but they told them that was not allowed? And weapons are not your personal property, right? So he was bound by restrictions on when he could take his gear with him whenever he was doing something while off duty, no? |

He's guilty but of what has yet to be dicided Army general to start investigating how, why Bowe Bergdahl left base. |

Yeah he looks more awkward/scared than happy or glad.It could be worse; the guy with a beard, Badruddin Haqqani, now sleeps with the fishes. Obama had him whacked. Bowe is not in the stockade, they take him shopping and to the library. No parade though, Obama just wants this to go away. There is no doubt Obama wished he left him where he was. |

It remains to be seen at election time, which is not far off, whether this flub by the Pres. will impact congressional elections if the democrats stay silent on the matter. I know quite a few veterans and to a man they all fail to understand why this happened. No man left behind always referred to men killed or captured in combat. Men who walk off their post to visit the other side are called deserters and were usually court marshaled if they ever returned. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

Men who walk off their post to visit the other side are called deserters and were usually court marshaled if they ever returned. To prove desertion they must prove he NEVER intended to return; 180 days is AWOL, 181 desertion. As for wandering off to visit the Taliban what did they expect they were getting when they let a Coast Guard reject enlist? A general court martial will bring out some very embarrassing truths about Obama's troop build up in Afghanistan. The Army does not do well when civilian activists get involved in their business. I just don't know who has more to win, the Tea Party or the community activists. There is a reason this is being kept quiet; the only ones keeping this alive are the Taliban. A general discharge with a lifetime of dealing with the VA is punishment enough. |

Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl returns to regular Army duty. When off duty, Bergdahl will be free to leave the base unescorted and go where he wants, according to an Army official. Desertion is off the table or he would be in the stockade. Bergdahl is not a traitor, he, like many posters here, have misguided ideas about the world. I wonder if his duty has anything to do with latrines? |

Bergdahl is not a traitor, he, like many posters here, have misguided ideas about the world. It says the investigation is still ungoing. So I would guess that desertion is still a possibility. |
