I missed tonight's show, I was busy telling people they were wrong in the Interweb. There is a replay Monday on Discovery channel then it will be on the Interweb for 50 days. Carl Sagan, IMHO, was better at grabbing one's attention and showing how fantastic the universe is. Perhaps because this is covering the same things the fascination isn't a keen. |

I didn't see any political issues NGT said as He 'is' hurtling 100s of Km throught Titan's 'Smog'. Smog? Is a Human/Earth Construct. A Scientist knows Titan's Atmosphere is not Smog. And why does Titan have 'Smog'? NGT also says, 'the Oil Coloured Darkened lakes when refering to Titan's Lakes. Nope, not Oil as he stated earlier, but methane, so why say Oil? 'Smog', 'Oil', oopsie, Means Man Made Climate Change. BINGO! One of Many Little Statements like this during EP 1 and EP 2 and MOre tO COme. Besides the Blatant Politcal references, the Subliminal mentioned above shows The Agenda of Those Involved. State The Science Not The Politics NGT. ' ' May we All have a METAMORPHOSIS. REASON. NGT said as He 'is' hurtling 100s of Km throught Titan's 'Smog'. Smog? Is a Human/Earth Construct. A Scientist knows Titan's Atmosphere is not Smog. Because that is the color of complex liquid hydrocarbons, perhaps? In the Wikipedia article on Titan you can find: The atmosphere of Titan is largely composed of nitrogen; minor components lead to the formation of methane and ethane clouds and nitrogen-rich organic smog. The hydrocarbons are thought to form in Titan's upper atmosphere in reactions resulting from the breakup of methane by the Sun's ultraviolet light, producing a thick orange smog. Linked NASA JPL article: The dark brown sands appear to be made up of the same kind of complex organic chemicals that dominate Titan's smoggy atmosphere. If you consider yourself representative of one or both of these, then by radicalizing a science thread and dragging politics into it for completely factually incorrect reasons you're doing a good enough job of that on your own. If you wish to keep politicizing, please start a thread in Politics for this where it belongs! |

If you wish to keep politicizing, please start a thread in Politics for this where it belongs! Smog is a type of Air Pollutant. Hmmm, No Air and No Pollution on/around Titan. Pollution is a Earth/Human Construct. Air contains Oxygen. Titan has Ice. Frozen Oxygen. When a Volcano melts Ice on Titan, the Oxygen...what, makes Air? So, Pollution 'is' Earth/Human made, and Air 'is' Not Titan Made, unless what NGT will 'See' Later UnderMethane on Titan says: 'Yep, dat sounds good to me', we'll go wif dat'. So, again, Everything 'Is' Politics, So 'Is' COsmOs. Expecially NOw-a-Days. Since Science is Part of Everything, My Comments About a show I am watching-which this thread Mentions...Politics, through Non-Science statements. ' ' May we All have a METAMORPHOSIS. REASON. There was no negative or anthropocentric implication in using "smog" in this context at all. It simply meant an opaque haziness in an atmosphere caused by simple colorless gaseous compounds being split by sunlight and reforming as more complex and coloured compounds. You could always spin it the other way as this seems to indicate that smog and atmospheric hydrocarbons in general are perfectly natural. :^p |

but all these hydrocarbures cant be a solution for mankind exploration fuel / or even to be used on earth ? It's all about and politics and money here on Earth *sigh* If only a few people could convince the world of what's right to do... rOZZ Music Pictures |

I don't think it would be a very good idea importing even more carbon from elsewhere to turn into CO2 and put into the atmosphere. And I consider the cost not be in money but in materials, effort and energy. Even if you burned it to propel it here, what will you react it with? A huge quantity of oxygen would have to be transported there or split off. Suppose you transported it in a huge spherical blob and managed to get it into Earth orbit. How do you get it to the surface without it burning up on descent? |

Questions scientists will have answers to, in time. Well, I'm no professional, but if I was responsible for allocating research moneys I'd been looking at something like clean thorium fission, fusion or other alternatives for long-term sustainability and I doubt anything else will happen with this, certainly not for fueling Earth. As far as being a refueling point for "out there" who knows... that may be viable. |

The original Cosmos was so much better than this "sequel". Nothing against Neil deGrasse Tyson, but he's no Carl Sagan, and the production of this new series is rather lackluster. I'm surprised - I was hoping and expecting something that would grab me. I guess you can't beat the charisma of Carl Sagan and a late 70's soundtrack. ;~} The mind is a weird and mysterious place |

While I'm sure the producers of the new show, which includes Carl Sagan's widowed wife Ann Druyan, hoped to create a fascinating show, I don't think the goal was to necessarily compete with the original. Rather it was meant to be a refresher; to update the material to more accurately reflect new scientific findings. I think the ultimate goal was to merely engage the younger audience of today like the original did for children of yesteryear. |

I'm also deeply enamored of the original series and book as they appeared during my "formative years" when everything was new and exciting, but young people seem as excited by this one as we were. I'm getting older and harder to impress these days too. :^) Goldurn dagnab music these days is all noise too and we don't have any good movies or TV any more grumblegrumble the onion fell out of my belt... |

but all these hydrocarbures cant be a solution for mankind exploration fuel / or even to be used on earth ? I've had an idea about that for a long time. Build a fleet of large robotic space tankers, say about a dozen, that are continuously travelling out to Jupiter or Saturn. Once they reach the gas giant they make a low pass that scoops up a load of methane and then time a burn that puts them on a trajectory back to earth. As they approach earth a transfer vehicle does a rendezvous and offloads the precious cargo. The tanker then slingshots around the earth and heads back out for more. With a dozen or so of these tankers in operation there would be a fresh supply every few months. The tankers could also serve as instrument platforms or taxis for the exploration of the outer solar system. The only problem is getting the cargo from orbit to the surface. But maybe by then there will be a space elevator or a craft equipped with an anti-gravity device to make re-entry a safer and more pleasant ride.
