William here is a link about the ice sheets i suggest you bookmark it and check it on a regular basis http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/ |

And while you at it bookmark this 1 too as it is more telling of what is going on seeing as you claim to understand data . http://www.weatherzone.com.au/climate/indicator_sst.jsp?lt=global&lc=global&c=ssta |

yep Chris that 1 is important . I keep track of that with the sst anomaly |

Scientists: 'Extreme' Solar Storm Heading to Earth An extreme solar flare is blasting its way to Earth and could mess up some power grids, satellites and radio transmissions, scientists say. It's been several years since Earth has had a solar storm of this size coming from sunspots smack in the middle of the sun, said Tom Berger, director of the Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado. I hope their wrong. http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory/scientists-extreme-solar-storm-heading-earth-25416134 |

I kind of wish I lived up north now as they say there should be some spectacular auroras Friday night. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

Scientists: 'Extreme' Solar Storm Heading to Earth :/ uh-oh Well I'm not going to exactly but I might buy a couple of candles tomorrow. Thanks Lynn! Let's hope we just get some extra specially pretty Northern and/or Southern lights :) @Bob... I have often thought if there was a tv channel that only showed the polar lights - I'd never watch any other channel :) |

Scientists: 'Extreme' Solar Storm Heading to Earth My laptop computer with windows vista has a screen saver (which I use) that replicates the looks and the colors of the auroras. It stays on all night running seti@home and the first thing I see when I wake up is the screen saver. On my Windows 8.1 PC I have screensavers for most programs running on it (SETI@home Astropulse, climateprediction.net, Einstein@home). Only vLHC@home and ATLAS@home have no screensavers, not having graphics. Tullio |

Scientists: 'Extreme' Solar Storm Heading to Earth Ooh :) I might have to go and search one out for myself. Thanks Bob :) I like the seti screensaver but it rotates too much for me to the point where I can't watch it for long at all without falling off my chair :( |

Thanks Lynn Active Region 2158, now near center disk, produced a X1 (NOAA Scale R3 - Strong) solar flare today at 10/1745 UTC (Sep 10th at 01:45pm EDT). Impacts to HF radio communications on the daylight side of Earth lasted for a little more than an hour. A x class flare is not good http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/today.html this is the data . This 1 has a strong x=ray component it's the blue line in the charts we have had only M class for the last few years X is bad . probly wont be able to watch the T.V no loss there or have trouble making a phone call on a mobile that is not so nice . |

Thanks Lynn Thank You Glenn. Today is 9/11, scary if the sun decides to emit a solar flare, X Class. :( 93 million miles from Earth, with tons of power. |

NASA's SDO Watches Giant Filament on the Sun NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, which watches the sun 24 hours a day, has observed this gigantic filament for several days as it rotated around with the sun. If straightened out, the filament would reach almost across the whole sun, about 1 million miles or 100 times the size of Earth. SDO captured images of the filament in numerous wavelengths, each of which helps highlight material of different temperatures on the sun. By looking at any solar feature in different wavelengths and temperatures, scientists can learn more about what causes such structures, as well as what catalyzes their occasional giant eruptions out into space. http://www.nasa.gov/content/goddard/sdo-watches-giant-filament-on-the-sun/index.html |

Sun Unleashes Powerful Solar Flares, Disrupting Radio Communications The sun is at it again, unleashing a series of solar flares including one that caused brief disruptions in communication systems. NASA said its space-based Solar Dynamics Observatory observed an X-class solar flare that peaked at 1:01 a.m. EDT on Oct. 19. Another X-class flare came at 10:28 a.m. EDT today, Oct. 22, according to the National Weather Service's Space Weather Prediction Center. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/10/22/solar-flares-disrupting-radio-communications_n_6029862.html |

This may have been what was messing with my cell phone a couple of days ago, but I doubt it. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

From NASA. Sun Sizzles in High-Energy X-Rays For the first time, a mission designed to set its eyes on black holes and other objects far from our solar system has turned its gaze back closer to home, capturing images of our sun. NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, or NuSTAR, has taken its first picture of the sun, producing the most sensitive solar portrait ever taken in high-energy X-rays. http://www.nasa.gov/jpl/nustar/sun-sizzles-in-high-energy-x-rays/index.html The image is available at: http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/spaceimages/details.php?id=pia18906 |

Coronal Hole Spotted On The Sun Is Hundreds Of Times Bigger Than The Earth Talk about big! A dark hole hundreds of times bigger than the Earth has been spotted on the surface of the sun. A photo of the enormous "coronal hole" (below) was snapped by a camera aboard NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory on Jan. 1, 2015. (Story continues below image.) http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/05/sun-hole-nasa-earth_n_6416968.html |

Thank's Lynn Wondering if this is because we are nearing the solar peek and it's starting to ramp down the solar cycle so far |

Thank's Lynn Welcome Glenn. Thanks for the chart. :) Looked like some nuclear fusion reaction in the giant hole. |

the heaviest element, Iron, makes a Star collapse, something to ponder over... http://www.space.com/28146-sun-iron-heart-behavior.html?adbid=10152570432596466&adbpl=fb&adbpr=17610706465&cmpid=514630_20150106_38332207 Other interesting links concerning this matter: http://curious.astro.cornell.edu/question.php?number=77 http://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/comments/1l99tx/how_did_elements_heavier_than_iron_form_given/ rOZZ Music Pictures |
