Solar Storm Arrives

The solar storm that’s been hurtling a billion tons of material toward our planet at two million miles per hour is now slamming into Earth’s atmosphere, NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center tells ABC News.

Now I have to go outside, and look for an aurora.

The sun has been doing that for ages and we're still ok. That's what I mean with Nature's balance, everything is in balance. The atmosphere protects us just enough so we can see those beautiful aurora's.

And let's all hope it stays that way for a long loong time...

A large coronal mass ejection has reached Earth – days after the Sun sent a massive burst of solar wind and electromagnetic radiation towards our planet. While causing no major geomagnetic storm, it has produced spectacular auroras in northern Europe.

A giant cloud of solar material called a coronal mass ejection escapes the sun in this Jan. 14, 2013, image from the ESA/NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory. Scientists use this kind of picture, called a coronagraph, in which the sun is obscured, to better see the sun's atmosphere, the corona

The sun also contains Lithium, go figure.

On Jan. 28, 2014, NASA's Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph, or IRIS, witnessed its strongest solar flare since it launched in the summer of 2013. Solar flares are bursts of x-rays and light that stream out into space, but scientists don't yet know the fine details of what sets them off.

Never Underestimate the power of the Sun.

Earth's magnetic field is the magnetic field that extends from the Earth's interior to where it meets the solar wind, a stream of charged particles emanating from the Sun. Its magnitude at the Earth's surface ranges from 25 to 65 microtesla.

On March 29, 2014, an X-class flare erupted from the right side of the sun... and vaulted into history as the best-observed flare of all time. The flare was witnessed by four different NASA spacecraft and one ground-based observatory – three of which had been fortuitously focused in on the correct spot as programmed into their viewing schedule a full day in advance.

The sun's 'long-lost BROTHER' revealed: Star born from same gas cloud discovered - and it could host planets with alien life

The star, named HD 162826, is 15 per cent more massive than our sun
Scientists believe it was born from the same gas cloud as our own star
HD 162826 is located 110 light-years away in the constellation Hercules

A First for NASA's IRIS: Observing a Gigantic Eruption of Solar Material

A coronal mass ejection, or CME, surged off the side of the sun on May 9, 2014, and NASA's newest solar observatory caught it in extraordinary detail. This was the first CME observed by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph, or IRIS, which launched in June 2013 to peer into the lowest levels of the sun's atmosphere with better resolution than ever before. Watch the movie to see how a curtain of solar material erupts outward at speeds of 1.5 million miles per hour.

How The Universe Works

New season tonight.

How does light escape from the sun? We take a journey from the centre of the sun, following the path of light. We witness its fiery birth from in the core, its 430,000 mile battle against gravity and magnetism, and its escape from the solar surface.
