i have set up 3 separate preference, but all computer, including the ones that i set them to be school and work, take defult preference, what should i do?

Wait. It is a known bug. It should be fixed in the 4.5x client. I don't recomend you upgrade now as there are still other problems with the 4.5x clients.

I think this problem still exists. How can I update the Boinc client, if I can't compile it from source. Any beta download site available ???

You can find the latest development (beta) builds at the BOINC website. They're underneath the regular builds, but you need to click a link to show them. Upgrading to the latest version solved the problem for me.
