Message 1448132 - Posted: 28 Nov 2013, 22:21:46 UTC - in response to Message 1447628.

Comet Ison was severely battered in its encounter with the Sun, and largely destroyed. Telescopes saw the giant ball of ice and dust disappear behind the star, but only a dull streamer emerge.

Bummer :(

Shame about the usual sensationalism...

So... How many times has Ison already made the encounter?

Might it be that all the readily volatile volatiles have been blasted off and the comet surface has been now newly melted/annealed to stifle any further grand shows?

Then add the great extreme cooling as the comet retreats from the sun to then crack open the surface to reveal, oncemore, a comet...

Wait and see and watch the show!

Keep searchin',

Latest, read all about it.

Hope still for 'dead' Comet Ison

After several days of continued observations, scientists continue to work to determine and to understand the fate of Comet ISON: There's no doubt that the comet shrank in size considerably as it rounded the sun and there's no doubt that something made it out on the other side to shoot back into space. The question remains as to whether the bright spot seen moving away from the sun was simply debris, or whether a small nucleus of the original ball of ice was still there. Regardless, it is likely that it is now only dust.

Comet ISON comes in from the bottom right and moves out toward the upper right, getting fainter and fainter, in this time-lapse image from the ESA/NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory. The image of the sun at the center is from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory.

So, is it too early to classify this one as an observational dud, at least for those of us in the northern hemisphere? I'm sure there is a lot of scientific data to be analyzed but I was hoping for a good night time light show.

ISON update

There is an update from NASA at NASA Begins Search For What Is Left Of Comet ISON

At the end of the report there is news of a workshop, that will be available for viewing.

NASA's Comet ISON Observing Campaign is holding a post-perihelion workshop to discuss the status of Comet ISON, to be held at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory on Dec. 6, 2013. The morning sessions, from approximately 8:30 am EST to 11:30 am EST, will be available for viewing at: http://www.livestream.com/cometison. More details on the meeting are available at http://www.isoncampaign.org/ison-followup-meeting.

One thing about the nature of comets, a new one could come ripping through the inner solar system at any time. Maybe the next one will put on a better show.

Comets come from two major areas of our solar system: the Kuiper (pronounced KY-per) Belt and the Oort (pronounced OR-t) Cloud. Each of these regions contains billions of comets, but they have so much room in these vast rooms of space that they get no closer to each other than we on Earth do to the sun.

Science channel, had an episode last night on this subject.
NASA, is sending a probe to rondevu with a comet, 2014.
