Oh I think mankind will Lynn, given time, but the first one will likely be a one way trip. I also don't think it will be in my lifetime either. I'm just grateful to have seen man on the moon, as a kid, I never thought I'd even see that :-) Space travel at this point in time, is likely, but doubt it in the future. Radiation is going to be a hurdle for any manned mission. I don't remember much of the moon mission, that well. |

It would take lots more initial money, but rotating donut-shaped habitats seem destined to be a better leap over more conventional ones. "Gravity" would be present for its inhabitants, as well as better insulative protection against solar radiation. More personnel and cargo, including scientific gear, could be taken/manufactured along the way. And, they would be a home, away from home, when in Mars orbit. Less Mars surface construction would be needed, as well, and non-scheduled returns to the space-station could be effected, in case of an emergency on the surface. That concept should lend well to a multi-national effort. |
