Update. CERN fires up particle smasher after upgrade The low-energy collisions took place in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Tuesday morning, CERN said in a statement. The protons collided at an energy of 450 gigaelectronvolts (GeV), allowing the scientists to fine tune LHC's detectors as they prepare to crank the power up to allow collisions at an unprecedented 13 teraelectronvolts (TeV), it said. http://www.thelocal.ch/20150505/cern-fires-up-particle-accelerator-after-upgrade |

Updates: US-CERN agreement paves way for new era of discovery A new agreement signed yesterday in Washington between the United States and CERN will pave the way for renewed collaboration in particle physics. The agreement, signed in a White House ceremony by the US Department of Energy, US National Science Foundation and CERN will enable continued scientific discoveries in particle physics and advanced computing. LHC Season 2: Follow the people at the frontiers of physics What do physicists dream of? What do they hope to discover when they harvest new data from the world's most powerful particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC)? In the new video series "LHC Season 2: New frontiers in physics" the camera follows 11 physicists from the four large LHC experiments ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb. Nice to hear Julie, that Turkey also join the Project. CERN member Countries Belgium (1954) Denmark (1954) France (1954) Greece (1954) Italy (1954) Yugoslavia (1954) - left the partnership in 1961, but had like most other countries, and the EU observer status Netherlands (1954) Norway (1954) Switzerland (1954) UK (1954) Sweden (1954) Germany / West Germany (1954) Austria (1959) Spain (1961) - left the partnership in 1969, again a member in 1983 Portugal (1985) Finland (1991) Poland (1991) Hungary (1992) Slovakia (1993) Czech Republic (1993) Bulgaria (1999) |

update: Large Hadron Collider captures incredibly rare particle decay for the first time For the first time, scientists at CERN have observed extremely rare leftovers from subatomic particles. The observations support a fundamental theory of particle physics, according to a paper published today in the journal Nature. It's hoped that the research will help guide future investigations into dark matter and other phenomena that the Standard Model of particle physics cannot explain. The findings are based on data collected between 2011 and 2012 at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Switzerland. http://www.theverge.com/2015/5/13/8599705/large-hadron-collider-discovery-meson-decay |

The SESAME Synchrotron Radiation Facility sponsored by UNESCO is being built near Amman in Jordan.Participants are Palestinian National Authority, Jordan, Iran, Israel, Cyprus, Pakistan and Turkey. Its director is an Italian coming from the Elettra Synchrotron Radiation Facility built by Carlo Rubbia near Trieste. Tullio |

Thanks Janne. I have worked near Elettra while at Area Science Park and know they are building a Free Electron Laser, the first in Italy. But we Trieste people are rather shy and people don't give us much credit. After all, Sigmund Freud started his scientific career in Trieste and Edoardo Weiss, who was a disciple of Freud, had to go to America. Franco Gulli, a violinist and son of my piano teacher Mercedes, had to go to America to be appreciated. Tullio |

The ATLAS and CMS teams of CERN publish a joint paper on Physical Review Letters with 5154 authors on the properties of the Higgs boson. The paper consists of 9 pages plus 24 pages of authors names and institutions. This is Big Science. Tullie |

Update: CMS and LHCb experiments reveal new rare particle decay In an article published today in Nature, the CMS and LHCb collaborations describe the first observation of the very rare decay of the B0s particle into two muon particles. The Standard Model, the theory that best describes the world of particles, predicts that this rare subatomic process happens about four times out of a billion decays, but it has never been seen before. The analysis is based on data taken at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in 2011 and 2012. These data also contain hints of a similar, but even more rare decay of the B0, a cousin of the B0s. rOZZ Music Pictures |

The "Nature" article had 2700 authors but their names were not printed, only shown online. Physical Review Letters instead printed them all. There is a page charge on Physical Review, I don't know the policy of "Nature". Tullio |

CERN LHC beams reached 6.5 TeV energy each, which means collisions at 13 TeV. Experiments will start collecting data in June. Tullio |
