Carl Sagan's "Cosmos": Its actually 3 x 10^8 meters per sec. That's true, but try to figure out what the energy must be to accelerate a 100,000 lb space ship to, say, 95% the speed of light. Don't forget relativistic effects. Where is that energy going to come from --anti-matter annihilation may be the answer. So this mode of propulsion may be far far off in the future. Also we would have to spend the same amount of time decelerating as well. |

Raytheon, Boeing, Lockheed Martin and others and possibly Honeywell are developing plasma engines The ones I have read about have extremely low thrust; plus they would have to have some material to eject. Do you have any details on the specifics of these efforts. |

The NASA Dawn Spacecraft is using a xenon ion ejecting engine, powered by the Sun, to go from Vesta to Ceres. Also the ESA GOCE spacecraft, which just reentered the atmosphere after finishing a two years mission, had an ion engine to maintain it in a low orbit, against atmospheric friction. Tullio |
