Yes, it should have been realized that if the correct date couldn't even be specified, there would be no way to know where on Earth such an asteroid would hit. This requires not only the correct date, but the time on that date, as well. A particularly high degree of precision would be needed to define a small target like Puerto Rico.

In the news..

NASA: There is No Asteroid Threatening Earth

Numerous recent blogs and web postings are erroneously claiming that an asteroid will impact Earth, sometime between Sept. 15 and 28, 2015. On one of those dates, as rumors go, there will be an impact -- "evidently" near Puerto Rico -- causing wanton destruction to the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States and Mexico, as well as Central and South America.

This has all started because there is a Asteroid that has the potental to hit Earth this ateroid has a name but untill 2028-2029 we will not know 100% weather it will come back and hit us 7 years later it all depends on weather it goes through what N.A.S.A calls the keyhole .

The Asteroid is called Apophis the god of destruction .(hence all the doom dayers saying it will hit )

We won't actually know till it gets closer to the time . The keyhole is a place in the sky where if the Asteroid pass through it will put it on a collision course 7 years later and hit but there is a very low expectaion it will pass through the keyhole .

N.A.S.A has known about this Asteroid for many years and is keeping a eye on it

Meteor Explodes in Skies Over Thailand

A meteor exploded over the sky in Thailand in a bright streak of gold.

Meteors are also known as "falling stars." This meteor crashed through the Earth's atmosphere in the daytime. It was recorded on many video cameras that drivers keep on the dashboards of their cars.

I have seen one in real life at daytime.
Only for about 2 seconds before it "exploded" as in Thailand but in my case with a blue-green streak.

color is from a composition burn...similar to fireworks colors! ;)

but really...if I saw 1 falling near in a Sea...my reaction would be "Shit!"

It's a bit strange that the streak was blue-green.

I saw probably a M-type asteroid. But I belive nickel and iron burns with a white color.
Blue-green color suggest it should have been cupper.
Anyway. It was quite spectacular.

One of these days?? If one of these rocks were to hit, would NASA tell us??

EXCLUSIVE: These THREE asteroids REALLY could HIT Earth and 'wipe out life'

Two of the hulking asteroids could even strike our planet in YOUR grandchildren's lifetime, NASA and the European Space Agency have admitted.

The cosmic boulders are on a NASA list of potentially-hazardous asteroids (PHAs) that actually pose a real risk of hitting us.

Scare stories have swept the internet about an apparently fictitious killer asteroid about to strike Puerto Rico any day, so there has never been so much interest in space rocks colliding with Earth.

I saw one while camping in the Mojave in the early 60's. We had a view of 50 miles and it lit up the whole desert a bright green. Impacted over a hundred miles away in Nevada somewhere but I don't know if anything was ever found.
It probably wasn't very big - maybe football-sized - but it had to be moving incredibly fast. Looked more like green lightning than an object falling.

They can get very bright. One I remember did a 135 degree arc nearly overhead. Some friends and I were up in the Malibu hills out doing some star gazing when it made it pass. It was as bright as the full moon and was casting shadows. It has been too many years for me to remember the direction, but most likely if it wasn't a graze it would be somewhere on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

Big asteroid to buzz Earth on Halloween, not another like it until 2027

An unexpected and large asteroid is coming around for a rare flyby, zipping past Earth close enough for scientists to get a good look.

We know minute details about the surface of Pluto. A rover's getting personal with rocks on Mars. But we don't know everything about space. Sometimes we get some scientifically interesting surprises right up close to Earth. Asteroid 2015 TB145 is one of those.

They don't say how big it is, but it's worth noting that it was only found 10 days ago.
Seems we've dodged another bullet. For now.

Big enough, estimated between 500-2000 ft in diameter. Scary thing is, it wasn't discovered until last week.

If it were discovered a year ago and on a collision course there would still be nothing we could do about it.

yes we could...'cause:

so local evacuation will be in order!

Probably Arecibo wiill watch it, as it is a planetary radar like the 34 meter antenna at Goldstone, a NASA Deep Space Network antenna.

I've read the NASA plans. Goldstone will launch a radar beam, and the reflections will be collected by Arecibo and Green Bank.
The expected resolution is 2 meters/pixel.
