only if all uncertainties are eliminated Science must be provable and repeatable otherwise it becomes political. We know that rocks have and will hit the Earth, that is science fact. We can't predict with enough certainty though when it will happen again so now it becomes more political than science. ![]() |

I may not agree with your 'Humanities', as they are not provable or predictable, but I will defend your right to think as you please. ![]() |

Empirical means based on, concerned with, or verifiable by observation or experience rather than theory or pure logic. Really? Is that quote from Wikipedia? Evenin' Chris:) See ya next week:) but probably see you on the screen before that:) This isn't the Cafe Julie... rOZZ Music Pictures |

Monster asteroid slated to zoom past Earth on Sunday Asteroid 2014 HQ124, otherwise known as ‘The Beast,’ will safely pass about 770,000 miles above Earth this weekend. The asteroid is between 800 and 1,300 feet wide. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/monster-asteroid-slated-zoom-earth-sunday-article-1.1820882 |

NASA says that both Goldstone and Arecibo antennas have been used as radars to track the orbit of this asteroid. This means that Arecibo is not in danger of being closed, it is too important in the watch for dangerous asteroids. Tullio |

They're being likened to the Mona Lisa -- four fossil meteorites that may be linked to an ancient cosmic crash in the early universe. Dr. Philipp Heck, curator of meteorites and polar studies at the Field Museum in Chicago, made the comparison to the iconic Leonardo da Vinci portrait -- and not without reason. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/06/21/fossil-meteorites-cosmic-collision_n_5513012.html Rare Fossil 'Mona Lisa' Meteorites May Be Evidence Of Ancient Cosmic Collision |

Potentially Dangerous Asteroid is Defying the Laws of Gravity ... well, sort of. Experts have determined that a massive asteroid that is due to orbit dangerously close to the Earth is actually composed of rubble spinning at an incredibly fast rate. Somehow, these surface rocks aren't tearing away from the whole to fly off into space, and astrophysicists are wondering why. http://www.natureworldnews.com/articles/8539/20140813/potentially-dangerous-asteroid-defying-laws-gravity.htm |

Potentially Dangerous Asteroid is Defying the Laws of Gravity ...asteroid has a one in 300 chance of striking the earth in the year 2880. *check diary* It's alright Lynn, I'll be out that day... :) Since then, new observations have corrected that chance to one in 19,800. Intriguing! Thank you! :) |

Huge asteroid set to wipe out life on Earth - in 2880 Kilometre-wide asteroid 1950 DA has a one-in-300 chance on 16 March, 2880, US scientists say A huge asteroid spinning at an "impossible" rate is hurtling toward Earth, on track to wipe out human life - but not until 16 March, 2880. Asteroid 1950 DA has a one-in-300 chance of hitting the globe on the appointed day. Although that may sound like slim odds, it is the most likely asteroid to collide with our planet. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/11037247/Huge-asteroid-set-to-wipe-out-life-on-Earth-in-2880.html |

NASA's Spitzer Telescope Witnesses Asteroid Smashup NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope has spotted an eruption of dust around a young star, possibly the result of a smashup between large asteroids. This type of collision can eventually lead to the formation of planets. Scientists had been regularly tracking the star, called NGC 2547-ID8, when it surged with a huge amount of fresh dust between August 2012 and January 2013. http://www.nasa.gov/press/2014/august/nasas-spitzer-telescope-witnesses-asteroid-smashup/ pic's :) |

Newly found asteroid to pass close to Earth on Sunday (CNN) -- A newly discovered asteroid will pass "very close" to Earth on Sunday, NASA says. The space rock is estimated to be 60 feet (18 meters) long. It's expected to fly over New Zealand about 2:18 p.m. EDT (11:18 a.m. PDT / 18:18 UTC.) It won't hit Earth or any of the thousands of satellites orbiting the planet, NASA says. It will give astronomers and scientists a chance to study it. http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/04/tech/innovation/asteroid-flying-close-to-earth/index.html?hpt=hp_t2 It's the one they don't find that scares me. |

Bang! Thanks Gary! Meteor Leaves 40-Foot Crater Near Managua's Airport Updated at 11:45 p.m. ET There was an unexpected crash landing near the international airport in the Nicaraguan capital over the weekend, but luckily no one was hurt: A small meteor, thought to have broken off from an Earth-passing asteroid, left a 40-foot-wide crater. Have to watch those near miss asteroids. |
