I recently saw a repeat of a program aired a while back which talked about increasing our longevity through the manipulation of a few critical genes. They have already been able to double the lifespan of lab rats and other creatures and they claim it is not long before these treatments will be used on people. As I am approaching my 64th birthday I started thinking about whether, if it were available now, I would participate. Things like whether I would have to go back to work and what the quality of my health would be as I passed 100 weigh heavily in the equation. I wonder what other comparatively well educated but less than wealthy individuals think about the possibility.

Even though they are forging ahead with the research into extending the human lifespan I see a lot of problems regarding it's implementation. Things like who would have access to the drugs? How can we seriously contemplate a radical extension of the human lifespan without first curbing our reproductive urges. I wonder just who is providing the funds for this line of research.
