It took a while but I finally figured out why this is considered a super full moon. At least I think it has to do with the full moon falling on the summer solstice, the longest day of the year for the northern hemisphere. My understanding is that the super moon appears larger is because it it the closest it gets in it's orbit, commonly called the perigee. The solstice has nothing to do with it. |

My bad. After I did some additional reading I discovere what you wrote is true. It was just a coincidence that the full moon came within a couple of days of the summer solstice. I watched the full moon for a while tonight and even though the skys are mostly clear here tonight there is a lot of water vapor in the atmosphere making the moon appear to have several large rings around it. Very pretty. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

Hi Dave (OP) and musicplayer (for bringing it to my attention.) Here is a link to moon rise times for BC: Moonrise in Vancouver. You'll have to add or subtract a few minutes depending on your specific location. Also this is the west coast and these times are based on the horizon. Add a little extra time for the moon to get above the mountains. |
