Friendly reminder, please keep the discussion about Atlantis. Why should this thread be any different than most others? I have long marveled at the weird turns some topics take. Whether or not Atlantis was real, civilisations of that period did in fact exist as we know from the many archaeological discoveries. It is to Man's credit that we are a curious race of people, we like knowledge & exploring. Unfortunately, Man in his current guise will make it extremely difficult for future archaeologists in that we won't leave "material" fossils but a digital one! Floppies, CP/M GEM Dos 3 Win 8 etc, how will they be able to access especially as big companies like Microsoft want us all to go to subscription services a la cloud. Where will the books be? Will future archaeologists be able to decipher the digital messages left? |

Written documents are the main source of information about our past. There are some writing systems still not understood, such as Linear A of Crete. but most of the ancient alphabets (and hieroglyphs) have been deciphered thanks to findings such as the Rosetta Stone. I am not sure about magnetic disks, floppies, tapes etc. We cannot read even many magnetic recordings done in recent times given their constant evolution. Maybe punched card will be more durable. Of course Atlantis is real. It is in my daughter's boyfriend's gym bag. Going by the smell, there has to be something ancient and dead in there. :P Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas. Albert Einstein |

Atlantis is right here in Georgia. Just 240 miles from Nashville. |

Don't forget this thread! We could usefully combine the two?? I agree, but there are some here that are acting as if there is no evidence for there being any grain of truth to such legends. |

I think there is some basis behind the Greek poetic works about Atlantis similar to the stories about Troy. My personal take is that Santorini is what remains of Atlantis despite the inconsistency regarding it's location. Most of the other claimed sites are most likely wishful thinking on the part of quasi experts who push their theories to sell books or get financing for expeditions. Some people think that the Canary Islands are what is left of Atlantis. Their location nicely fits the traditional description. Also the Azores or is that the Canary Islands ? |

I've seen on TV some of the Akrotiri paintings, in Thera/Santorini and they are strikingly beautiful. The Minoan civilization was a peaceful one and was conquered after a tsunami had destroyed its fleet. Tullio |

Bimini is home to several landmarks said to contain mystical properties of obscure origins. I watched a special on TV. It was thought, Atlantis was there. |

I have read in Thomas Mann's "Joseph and his brothers" about the plague. Mann takes his plot from the Bible and expands it. Tullio |

The artifacts at Bimini appear to be man made but several geologists discount that claim with arguments that the objects are of natural origin. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |
