Sub discovers signs of legendary Atlantis RIO DE JANEIRO – A large mass of granite has been found on the seabed off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, suggesting a continent may have existed in the Atlantic Ocean, the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology and the Brazilian government announced. |

Brazilian 'Atlantis' found Geologists have announced the discovery of what has been dubbed the 'Brazilian Atlantis', some 900 miles from Rio. The legend of Atlantis, a sunken island thought to have once lay between Africa and South America, has been the subject of literary myths for centuries. But geologists in Brazil have now added their claims to speculation over the precise location of the mysterious land mass, mentioned first by Plato in around 360BC. A member of the Geological Service of Brazil with the rock dug out from the deep sea bed 1,500 km off the coast of Rio de Janeiro How can they tell from a rock?? Nah! Too good to be true. |

Just one more location to add to the list. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

Other than Atlantis being a complete work of fiction, Yep they found it. I recall that the writing that Homer created that included Altantis was the first mention of this fabled city. Why? because it only existed in His mind. The moral of the story basically is that no matter how great a society man builds, nature will always be greater. In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

I believe that Plato first mentioned Atlantis in Timaeus and Critia dialogues. Tullio |

The Iliad was considered as fiction until Heinrich Schliemann, an amateur archaeologist, found the remains of Troy in the Hissarlik hill in Turkey. Tullio |

In my opinion the best candidate for Atlantis is still the island of Thera where a volcano eruption around 1560 b.C. covered the city of Akrotiri under meters of ashes and provoked a tsunami which destroyed the Minoan fleet of Crete, leaving it defenseless to the Mycenaean invasion. I've followed a series of TV lectures on RAI2 at 5 AM by professor Louis Godart of Naples Federico II University (also recorded them) and I have seen the beautiful Minoan paintings, well conserved by the ashes (like Pompeii paintings) after more than 3000 years. Traditionally Atlantis, if it exists, was supposed to be "beyond the pillars of Hercules". That of course refers to the Straits of Gibraltar, therefore somewhere in the Atlantic ocean, hence it's name. Plato wrote about Atlantis in 360BC and said it was lost about 12,000 years ago. If you look carefully at a detailed map of the Atlantic seabed, as I did when studying with the OU, there is no evidence of a sunken continent or large island, that could have previously been there. You are close but maybe it wasn't a continent maybe it did not sink maybe it appeared to have sunk , when in fact the sea rose and in was flooded under a few hundred meters of ocean and maybe there is a elevated area big enough to have supported a city and was surrounded by a small channel that would have had to have been crossed by boat .And maybe Plato was correct about the area he said it was 12000 years ago was when the last ice age ended Otherwise where Tullio said is the most likely place |

All fiction! Maybe somebody in 500 years or more might come across a battered copy of one of Clive Cussler's books & end up believing that Troy is indeed somewhere in East Anglia! |

Damn, FICTION !!! I was hoping to find Atlantis at the bottom of my garden. I've been digging for years, but found nothing.I still hadn't given up hope, and thought I could retire off the income from tourists when I eventually did find it. I'm going to give up looking now. John3760 |

Sometimes myths are based on ancient facts, as has happened with the Homer poems, and Schliemann had many adverse judgments before he found Troy. Then he excavated Knossos and found what he thought to be King Agamennon's gold burial mask, It was not, but he was a pioneer all the same. Tullio |

There is not a single shred of evidence for the existence of Atlantis. When your only argument is a insult it says more about your intelligence than anything I could say but then your not the only silly person in these message boards |
