I've never really been able to understand all that side of science, but as a young lad growing up throughout the 60's with the old black & white 425 lines then 625 televisions, watching The Sky at Night alongside other factual programs, it let the imagination fly wild.

And, I bet many here of the same generation more than likely had similar imaginations.

Along comes Mercury, Gemini, Apollo followed by Skylab along with Star Trek TOS to fuel it even further. With technology improving I often thought then that by the time I hit my fifties we would at least have numerous space stations in orbit if not a colony on the moon preparing for regular Mars flights.

Instead we've let Militarism, Selfishness & Greed dominate us. If we had put all that effort into Space & using Man's ingenuity, we may have got there by now.

Personally, I feel that the cancellation of the Space Shuttle has put Man's Space exploration back at least 50 years, if not a century. With the way other countries & private companies are working towards Space, I feel America will come to regret doing that.

I totally agree with your statement regarding the space shuttle. I feel it was a big mistake to end the program without a replacement already in place.

There was a BOINC project called AQUA@home which simulated a quantum computer. It was introduced by a Canadian firm called D-Wave which managed to sell what they called "quantum computer" D-Wave One to Lockheed Martin, an armament firm for a hundred million dollars. Then AQUA@home, which was criticized by some volunteers because it was seen as a profit searching project, disappeared with no explanation.

Ahhhhhh... That old Schrodinger's cat phenomenon again?

Was that a phenomenal Canadian wheeze that only one military department could buy? Now classified "Top Secret" whilst they try to get it to work or wait for the accountants to lose their memories due to old age?...

That project has gone suspiciously ephemeral, and only one device?

They are still working in the field and publish their results but there are some doubts in academic circles if they have really built a quantum computer. Quantum computing is still more related to basic research in quantum mechanics than to computer engineering, at least in my opinion.

There is a very good theory concerning the holographic representation of state for our universe that would be violated if that Canadian Quantum device did work as claimed.

There is also a religious theory-of-everything that God would just wrap us all up in the trash can and start again with something even more complicated or subtle if we were ever to find out his/her True designs...

Don't worry. I've been following this field of research since 1996 and have also written on it in an issue of Technology Review of MIT, Italian edition. But not much progress has been done, only more experiments. I've also taken part in AQUA@home, where AQUA stood for Adiabatic QUantum Algorithm. But it disappeared and never came back. Maybe Lockheed Martin had some reservations about it. Cheers.

I think you refer to the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox. But it consisted of a couple of photons, not to a photon split in half. They were entangled, and Einstein spoke of a "spooky action at distance".
