Hi PB,
Initially, I think the folks calling attention to the apparent problem with mikey's hosts (ghost-hosts?) were signalling mikey to look into it and either fix it or explain it. Historically, there have been a few mischief-makers trolling and polluting around the SETI campsite, and I think there was understandable concern.

Hard for us to read the minds of the Developers--and they certainly have to set firm priorities. Forcing solutions is rarely the best first option anyway. So, on the assumption that mikey has a bit of rust around the hinges, maybe he just forgets to pay his electric bill and the problem goes where most small problems go. Also, if the Developers perceive no potential problem in the mikey situation, a little reassurance when they have the time would go a long way.

Right. I agree and admire your restraint of judgement. Assuming malevolent intent in someone none of us knows personally is a slippery slope.

Ok it is becomming clearer to me.

Mikey Runs amuck and downloads hundreds of work units

See the results for this;

http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=382464

Then when yhe WU's time out for some reason Mikeys host starts to create Hosts
to accomidate the timed out WU's.

The Team at SETI fixes the host problem but leaves unchecked the WU's.

Then the process starts all over again...

I would block this account somehow and let Mickey complain
If he is still around....

I see it now. I just looked at his machines list and not the results pages. Taking a look around I didn't see this kind of stuff anywhere else. So, just using the good ol' principle of Occam's Razor I'd say it's not the programming, not the machine but most likely the dolt who owns the machine is doing something dumb or dumber. Just my personal opinion.

From: David Anderson

Tim:

We've been investigating the problem with that user and host.
We sent him mail asking if anything unusual at his end - no reply yet.
I don't think he's doing anything malicious.

We cleaned up the database of the 4,000+ host records he created recently.
The results will sort themselves out, although it will take a while.
