What I would like to see is that the ‘Upload’ and ‘Ready to Report’ are done at the same time (as it can be done manually). I don’t really see any reason for them to be done separately. It wouldn’t even matter if Boinc did them as two separate actions one after the other. If they were done at the same time people would have fewer Pending WU’s. There would also be less stored on their computer if the hard drive crashed (I am assuming that you do not get credit if your computer doesn’t send the ‘Ready to Report’ WU’s back, also would the WU’s need to sent out again causing a delay for everyone else). The only benefit I can see with the ‘Ready to Report’ system at the moment is that you can see how long the WU’s have taken to do. If the WU’s were also reported when they were being uploaded the ‘Ready to Report’ could be changed to ‘Reported’ which would show the same information and links that there is at the moment, the list would be cleared when more WU’s are downloaded. The scheduling server is a bottleneck. All work has to go through it in some form or fashion. There can be seperate data, web and science servers, with duplicates. But only one scheduler. By uploading results and reporting them seperately the number of requests to the scheduling server can be reduced. This is pretty dramatic on a high end computer that is set to connect once per day or higher. It goes from 20 connections down to 1. Multiply that by the number of active computers and you can see the savings in traffic. BOINC WIKI ![]() ![]() BOINCing since 2002/12/8 |

Surly a connection has already been made when my computer (which has a permanent internet connection) uploads a WU so reporting the WU would not really be an increased load on the scheduling server. Anthony |

In any case, 4.5x appears to have the report results immediately behavour. This however, may be turned off again before release to the public. ![]() ![]() BOINC WIKI |
