Where are your ancestors REALLY from?

Where are YOU from?
Where do your ancestors come from?
What race of people are you descended from?
And how far back can you trace your ancestors?

Most people when asked where they are from, they say, Britain, America, Japan, Ireland, France, or what ever country you live in.

Most people know where their father is from, their grand father, or maybe their great grand father. Some people who spend a few years tracing their roots, at best, can trace their linage back about 10 or 12 generations. But after that, there are almost no written records.

Your family surname can give you a rough general idea of where in the world your father's blood line comes from, but not your mothers line. DNA testing can tell you what ethnic group you belong to. But most people have never had a DNA test.

The Bible says that every single human being on earth descended from Adam and Eve, who were living in the Garden of Eden, down around modern day Iraq. That would make everyone on Earth an ancestral Iraqi.

Charles Darwin's theory says that your ancestors roamed the plains of Africa hunting and gathering. This would mean your ancestral home is Africa.

Where are you from? And how far back can you trace your roots?

John.

I live less than 35 km from the Cradle of Humankind.

My ancestors roamed through my present-day back yard, a few million years ago.

dad's side is Scottish and Irish but not Scottish-Irish. I know nothing of the Irish side. I can assume that the Scots were lowlanders most likely from north east scotland.

Moms side was Polish. Interestingly, My older brother showed a bit of Asian features as a child. I like to think its the Mongol in him. Both of moms parents came for the same area of Poland. Krakow. Another amusing thing was the language distinction. I assume there are differences in Polish because my Great Uncles(Grandmothers brother) married a woman that they said spoke "mountain" Polish.

I only know my nationalities, but I do not know where my actual ancestors come from.

I am Polish, Swedish and Irish on my mother's side, and Native American on my father's side. I am of two Native American tribes, the Navajo and the Apache tribes from what I've been told.

My ancestors were thrown out of the best countries in Europe.

Most likely that is the reason my ancestors came to America. My mother used to tell us her uncle told her that the family was run out of Scotland for stealing horses. My father's side of the family came from ireland, probably due to the potato famine. My great grandfather on my father's side was married to a native american from the region around Texarkana. It's nice to know in some ways but I regard myself as an American first and formost and have no ties to the places my ancestors came from.

I won't go too deeply into the Biblical description of our origins except to say it's part of the Jewish mythology and not historically factual.

This thread is really really interesting!!

Now anyone here who has white skin, and some type of European surname, knows their ancestors came from Europe. Most Americans are not American, they are really European - Spanish, British, Irish, Dutch, Italian, Polish, etc, etc.

Many people here mention a connection to Ireland. And John Neale, you live in South Africa, but your white, so your ancestors are European, and your surname "Neale" suggests Ireland or Scotland.

Now - I can take you back much much further than that!!

If your ancestors passed through Ireland, England, Scotland or Wales, there is a very old book from Irish history called "The Book of Invasions", or in the old Irish language its called "Lebor Gabála Érenn"; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lebor_Gab%C3%A1la_%C3%89renn

The Book of Invasions was written in the 11th century, possibly by monks or priests, they are not sure. But the book describes how all the various "tribes" came to the Island of Ireland over the coarse of a few thousand years. Its quite a violent book, as each successive tribe "invades" Ireland and fights for Kingship and power.

All these people passed through all the other European countries like England, Scotland and Wales, France, Greece, Germany. But it goes back further, it actually goes back as far as the Biblical Adam.

Because The Book of Invasions goes back to the Biblical Adam, academic scholars treat the book as pseudoscience, they say its pseudoscience because they don't trust the Bible. But the book is incredible, its got a massive genealogy of all the "Lost tribes of Israel" that went north out of Israel. If the book does turn out to be correct, then through that book, any one of you could trace your ancestors all the way back to the biblical Adam.

There is a full English translation of "The Book of Invasions" here if anyone wants to read it, its free;
http://www.maryjones.us/ctexts/leborgabala.html
There are 8 parts, and about 95 chapters in the book.

If The Book of Invasions is true, these peoples, these "tribes" are YOUR ancestors! These people have YOUR genes, they have YOUR DNA in them. YOUR blood flowed through their veins! And a part of them still lives inside YOU today! They are YOU, and YOU are them! This is YOUR history, and a large part of the history of the world!

you haven't been here have you? we have a lot more colors here than white and black. You might say we have many shades of color. We aren't all Europeans. We have people from pretty much every country of the world.

If The Book of Invasions is true

Are you claiming that it is? If so, why?

I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ...

Bobby,
For the last thousand years, The Book of Invasions was always taken as a factual history of the Irish people. Even today, the recent genealogy of the Irish still comes from that book, and several other old Irish manuscripts from the same era. Today, a very large part of the Irish population still trust the words of The Book of Invasions.

Yes, i do give this book credibility. Its not that i believe every word in the book, but i do give it the benefit of the doubt. Yes, i think the majority of it is true. Archaeology has confirmed many of the wars, battles and Invasions that are described in the book. The Island of Ireland has had a very violent history, right through to the modern civil war between Britain and Northern Ireland. People have been murdering and killing on the island of Ireland for the last four thousand years.

What does that mean Tullio? Are aware that Britain still have political control of 6 of the 32 counties of Ireland? Are you taking the piss or something?

Technically, I suppose it could be seen that way, but legally? No.

I think that a civil war is a war fought by people of the same nationality, like the American Civil War or the fighting between Italian partisans and Italian Fascists in 1943-45. I don't think this was the case of Ireland.

Before partition under Llyod George, the Irish uprising could be considered a civil war (as much as the American War of Independence was one). Northern Ireland has only existed since partition, as a subset of the counties that formed the province of Ulster.

If you are describing the recently ended troubles as a civil war, it was not between Northern Ireland and Britain, it was between sections of the Northern Irish.

So when do you think there was a civil war between Northern Ireland and Britain?
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ...

I know what a civil war can be. I was sent as a boy to buy bread in a mountain village where we had escaped from the Allied bombings of Trieste while Fascists in the bell tower and partisans in the mountain were shooting at each other. I was sent because, as a boy, I risked less than my father, who had fought with the Alpine Corps in Russia and had refused to join the Fascist army. So he was in danger both from the Fascist side and the partisans side because he had not joined them. His life was much linked to a roulette.

Very well voiced, Tullo.
My own history is not so graphic.
But, my grandparents came to this country as escapees from an opressive German republic.
They came here to escape what was then a very bleak future in the motherland.
There was no hope for them there any longer.

So they came to this country in hope for a better future.
I stand here today to confess that they did indeed find it.
I am one of their offspring, telling you this here and now.

I live in the house that Grandpa built.
Not figuratively, but literally.

Every stone and brick I can hold in my hand was laid by my father's father.
