Surely it's very dangerous for me to assume anything when it's your beliefs that are being discussed? The evidence you have provided thus far might lead readers to any one of a number of different conclusions, with no guarantee that any of them are correct.

An episode of In Our Time was mentioned earlier, have you listened to it? Have you read any of the items listed under "Further Reading"? If so, which ones?

Now that is a really intelligent question!

Doctors have been debating the function of the appendix for years. And would you believe, they still have not reached a definite consensus. People get stomach pains, and they just cut out the appendix, and the person seems to work just fine after the operation. So you MIGHT conclude that the appendix has no function. But that is a very simplistic conclusion to come too!

If i operate on you, and i cut off your right arm, you will still "function" as a perfect human being afterwards. But that does not mean your right arm has no function. So the appendix is the same. Its just harder to figure out the precise function of the organ.

But personally myself, i do believe it has some very specific function. Maybe it secretes some unusual acid only at very specific times to dissolve some very specific plant or protein. We will figure it out eventually, but it will take time. But it is not there by accident, it has some function.

In my opinion, the best attitude to have in relation to the appendix is to "keep and open mind". We will figure out its function in time.
