I think ship design is very conservative, compared to aircraft design. The best solution is to stay away from rocky coasts, ... And yet something like one big ship is lost or requires rescue/salvage on average each day... Only a few hit the main media news. Ships getting holed below the waterline happens. Hence there must be survivable contingencies for that. Hopefully such a thing does not happen to your ship, but it might... All a part of a type of thinking and design called "safety in depth"...
