Somebody in the science department at Yahoo was asleep when preparing the graphics for their story about the first day of fall. They showed the earth sun positions foe the smmer solstice with the tilt aimed at the sun instead of perpendicular as it should have been. They also billed it as a "rare" event even though they did state in the text that it happens once a year.

Maybe I should apply for the job as their science editor.

OK, the earth has an approximate 27 degree tilt. In June the tilt is facing directly at the sun with the northern hemisphere getting the most sunlight. In December the tilt is again facing the sun with the southern hemisphere getting peak sunlight. In March and September the tilt is perpendicular to the sun and both hemispheres get equal light. Yahoo news when reporting the annual event showed a graphic of the summer solstice instead of the autumnal equinox. If you still don't understand I can't help you.
