I don't know why this is in SETI@Home Science when there's nothing scientific about it. Putting aside all religious dogma, there's no logical, rational reason to believe anything major or catastrohpic is going to happen on that date at this time. As a race, we always seem enamored with our own end. We are taught that what has a beginning has an end. We keep asking when that end will be. Usually it's some nice, round number that sounds official, like the year 2000 scare (not just the Y2K bug either, some people thought the world was supposed to end because of some other catastrophe). People near the year 1000 thought the same. Now, because of some short-sightedness in designing a calander, and the fact that it is a relgious/spiritual thing, some people have themselves convinced that the world is going to end. Just like Y2K. Barring any new information, I don't see any reason to believe it won't be just another day. |

2012 is not real. And will not be for over a year. As far as predictions go, the only viable prediction for that exact year is by the Mayans. Their entire calendar was a count down to winter solstice, 2012. The problem is, is that the end of free life in the rain forest, their "universe", the end of all life? Even scholars of the mayans can not answer. The only answer was the "end of the age". Is the next age better? worse? I think it is safe to say the next 5,000 years will be different. Beyond that, I have no idea. I can make guesses on what I see around me. But I can not put everyone elses predictions in proper perspective. Honestly, I was more concerned about the date 9/9/99. You see in the late 70's and 80's... and well into the 90's.. we used that for a pending date, as in the "this is not due until we change it to a valid date". Anyway, I would highly recommend you not blow everything you own in 2012 with a big balloon payment in 2013. Janice |

I've been buying up massive amounts of survivor supplies. During the last month, when panic is at a fever pitch, I plan to sell it all at massively ridiculous prices then, in early 2013, I plan to retire to Tahiti. Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas. Albert Einstein |

I'd be much more impressed with the Mayan calendar if it had predicted their own end as the dominant culture. If the rock they carved this calendar onto had been larger, this discussion wouldn't be coming up for another couple of centuries. (they would have had more room to extend it further into the future) I do not fight fascists because I think I can win. I fight them because they are fascists. Hmmmm... 12/21/2012. What to do about it. Well, my thoughts is I am gonna get several kegs of Guinness, several bottles of vodka, Irish whiskey and rum, maybe a k of something else, and throw one heck of a party. Think about it... a LOT of people will want to go out in style, so this is the perfect opportuinity to throw a party that Mr. Heffner would be proud of lol Riding my Shadow ACE... it's what I do |

If you need a fake "end of the world" scenario as an excuse to party hard and be irresponsible, then you're doing it all wrong. ;) It's 1999 all over again. Too bad a few of my friends who did exactly that are very regretful of some of the things they did and it all came back to haunt them later. |

Considering any one cult announce some doom each year 2012 cannot be real. But considering math probability structures of that calendar should make tons of doubts and beliefs among the mass. Mandtugai! |

I saw the movie and those were real actors but most of the stuff was not real. RELAX. Besides if the worlds going to end there won't be any "i told you so's" to go around. So there's no point if fussing over the end of the world. If it happens nothing matters anymore and if it doesnt then well you waste a lot of money on your shelter In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

THE MAYAN CALENDAR The Mayan calendar is not actually a single calendar that westerners are used to referencing today. It is actually a complex system of multiple calendars used in conjunction. Two calendars used in conjunction are the Tzolk’in and the Haab. The Tzolk’in calendar consists of 260 days. The Haab consists of 365 days. The combined use of these calendars creates a cycle of 52 Haabs (52 years) and is referred to as the Calendar Round. Small cycles of 13 days (Trecena) and 20 days (veintena) exist as well. Another calendar used to track longer periods of time is referred to as the Long Count. This calendar is used to track dates relative to each other on a linear scale and utilizes a numeric decimal system to record dates. For example, the Mayan date for December 21, 2012 is 13.0.0.0.0. The long count cycle referred to as the “Great Cycle†lasts for 5,125.36 years. Correlating that to the Gregorian calendar used by most people in the world today, the starting date of the current long count cycle is August 11, 3,114 B.C. more.......... http://www.2012endofdays.org/Mayan/Mayan-Calendar.php http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayan_calendar http://www.pauahtun.org/Calendar/ http://www.world-mysteries.com/sar_3.htm http://www.webexhibits.org/calendars/calendar-mayan.html |

2012: Y2K The Squeal. I was dating an anthropology major for a time during my undergraduate degree and the understanding she gave me was that the Mayan calender is just like the Gregorian Calender we all know and love. The Gregorian Calender doesn't just end on Dec 31st of each year but rather renews into January 1st of the new year and that the Mayan calender is essentially doing the exact same thing in December 2012. |

The threat of the world ending in December 2012 is very very real. If you all send me $1, I will use my knowledge of the Mayans to intercede and have the Mayan ghosts allow the world to continue ... . Act now, and often! [Note to self: learn something about Mayans in case somebody asks.] |

This could happen? Does not read well or sound good. Forecasters keep eye on looming 'Solar Max' Dec 28 10:21 PM US/Eastern The coming year will be an important one for space weather as the Sun pulls out of a trough of low activity and heads into a long-awaited and possibly destructive period of turbulence. Many people may be surprised to learn that the Sun, rather than burn with faultless consistency, goes through moments of calm and tempest. But two centuries of observing sunspots -- dark, relatively cool marks on the solar face linked to mighty magnetic forces -- have revealed that our star follows a roughly 11-year cycle of behaviour. ~more~ http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=CNG.bdf9ddce1297325e1b97e06696026e73.111&show_article=1 |

The end of the world (as we know it) scheduled for 21 December 2012 A.D. will be postponed indefinitely due to total lack of public interest. We are entering the Year of the Rabbit hence there shall be plenty of bunnies susceptible to solarism neurosis. Perfect time to buy shares in a crafty sunscreen lotion manufacturer. |
