Keep what? An alien?

If you find anything, this program is only looking for purposely sent signals that would be evidence of an alien civilization. For all we know, the signal would take many years to reach us and the civilization could be wiped out by the time it reaches us.

I don't know why you'd want to keep a signal though.

..... so I can send it back, & invite 'em to my house? 'course, I can't get the dang program running, so my ?? are premature.

Does bring up a point though: I wonder what WOULD happen if a private citizen got verifiable contact with ET first. Govts. would go WILD!

Yes, you will be notified. It will probably be by email since we have not given them any other information to use to contact us.

- just to seek clarification:

If a persons computer (e.g. mine)is the computer that finds (by crunching) a legitimate E.T. signal within the downloads from seti@home, that person will be given recognition of some sort? Like on the Seti Institute monument you get your name on there if you are a member/donator.

E.G. on 25/06/11 Mr J.Bloggs Computer "Smells-Burnt" plucked from space noise the first proven E.T. intelligible signal. We think it was pretty cool :) -> Pies and beer have been dispatched.

More than one source for any signal has to be found so there'd be joint recognition between the discoverer of the signal and the second and third persons who then tune in to prove it's non-terrestrial yeah? or does the original discoverer of the signal get full credit...

- I think it deserves some deliberation.. one problem, isn't the person who set up the antennae, cables, receiver and a/d converter, server, software, computers, time effort and money, programming.. how about them guys??


I think what I'm trying to ask is how does the hierarchy of recognition work - When a signal is found what will the media-submitted report say?

Well, SETI@Home isn't affiliated with the SETI Institute. They are two different organizations both looking for the same thing. One major difference is that the SETI Institute has the financial backing of big figures like Paul Allen from Microsoft. SETI@Home relies completely on private donations.

As for recognition, we have to first understand that our workunits are only a portion of the sky, so multiple people will crunch multiple parts of the puzzle. Each workunit is sent out to at least 2 accounts, so twice the number of people are involved.

But in the end, once the signal has been identified, verified and peer-reviewed, every user involved and every scientist involved will get a mention of credit.

It is unclear exactly where the mention is going to appear, but I believe it will be in the official scientific report from SETI@Home.

Think I understand now how it all works now, I've been interested in the seti for ages - I used to use a radio scanner that could pick up around the "water hole" but after a few close encounters with lightning and having to drag my antenna down, with the paradox of do I a) leave it and risk lightning hitting the antenna and blowing my receiver/roof to bits, or b) risk getting hit by lightning while taking it down.. well, this is safer - if a little less involved :)

The SETI team will start meeting with strange and unusual ends; like being killed by ferret inhalation during a freak weasel stampede.

And the geniuses on the Nobel committee will give the Prize in Physics to a pair from someplace nobody's ever heard of that has no bread for doing something like spending $400 million developing a way to toast bread using nuclear waste.

They'll give the Peace Prize to someone like a President who would never, ever, use the military to bomb the heck out of people --- unless it was for their own good.

Or we could be wiped out by the time it gets here.

You see this is what you get when you leave the thinking to spacenerds..... Random abuse, ferrets, ignobel peace prizes. The first reply stating why would you want to keep the signal is closest to the mark. Well if you think about it, a signal within the human audible range would be worth a fortune, every broadcaster in the world would want it. Personally, I'd mash it up into techno dance track and bang out the first inter species number one hit and let the cash roll in.
