Hey, ive currently seen there is a SETI@home program, & then here on this site there is a BOINC program, are they connected one of the same or completely different? I have been leaning towards liking SETI@home (i think you call it classic version) & been using that & have already finished 1 data unit, the results show up on the http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/ but not the http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/ page, so now im wondering, they are both completely different? |

Different programs made by the same people that crunch the same data from Arecibo. Classic will eventually be replaced by Boinc. No word yet as to when. The results/stats for each are seperate. |

I think you should join here directly and would like to welcome you onboard Kyle! FYI - original link for this info and Q&As is: http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/transition.php We have released a new version of SETI@home based on BOINC, a general-purpose platform for distributed computing projects. We encourage you to switch to the new SETI@home. If you have problems with the new version, you can uninstall it and reinstall the old 'Classic' version of SETI@home. The schedule is: 1. On 14 May 2004 we made a 'snapshot' of SETI@home Classic user information (accounts, teams, profiles) and used it to initialize the new SETI@home database. 2. On June 22 2004 we made SETI@home/BOINC available for general use. There will be a 'transition period' during which you can run either SETI@home Classic or SETI@home/BOINC. During this transition period, SETI@home Classic accounts and team changes can be made, but they will not be carried over. 3. Once SETI@home/BOINC is running smoothly and versions are available for most platforms, we will turn off the data server for SETI@home Classic. At this point you will need to switch to SETI@home/BOINC. Happy crunching |

No don't join!! We don't need the extra competiton for the credits. LOL. Just kidding with you, sure join BoincSeti and any other projects you want under the Boinc core client. But be aware there have been some bumps along the way and I bet there will be more until this gets to be a more robust program. Right now everthing is running good besides a few minor issues. 98SE XP2500+ @ 2.1 GHz Boinc v5.8.8 And God said"Let there be light."But then the program crashed because he was trying to access the 'light' property of a NULL universe pointer. |

Off topic comment, sorry. But, hey Kyle, beautiful digital artwork on the webpage linked on your profile page. Especially Apollyon Impact. Wow. I didn't want to presume to post the link, but I'll bet some folks here would enjoy looking. Regards, Robert |

> Ah... So should i be using BOINC? If so it would be cool if there are plugins for it like there where for classic edition. Welcome Kyle. As stated earlier, the "classic" version will be going away some day so BOINC is probably the better choice. A caveat about bumps in the road has also already been offered. As for the plugins, BOINC was designed to eliminate the need for SOME of the plugins, especially the ones that cache workunits, like SetiDriver (among others). Other types of plugins are indeed being developed and some have been "released". Please find on the following page a link to the "BOINC Download Network" which is one source. http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/download_network.php Others probably are or will be available elsewhere. (???) By the way, those really ARE amazing graphics! Regards, |

Thanks for all the replied guys! :) Heyy, im really glad you all like my art! :D I posted a thread in CafeSeti at http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=5962 if you want to post about it there. :) Gomeyer, about plugins, you see i was looking for plugins like threadmaster & SETImoniter (which showed guassians, spikes, triplets & pulsars you collected in your computed data) i see threadmaster is there, which is good. Thanks for the link! :) |

Credits work completely different than in seti-classic. Your results have to be verified before you are granted credit. This can take a few minutes (best case) to a week or more (worst case). For more information, I would suggest checking out Paul's 'owners manual' here. And of course onc eyou get credits you will start showing up on stats pages such as mine (linked in my sig). But normally it'll go pretty fast! Happy crunching! Happy crunching |

> Ah i see! :) thanks for answering! :D Sorry I am a l;ittle late to the party Kyle, but belated welcome. The one good thing here in BOINC is we do have some more material that talks to the system than in classic. This is natural in that this is a much more complicated system than any of the other distributed computing projects. Click on my signature and that will get you started ... if you ask questions here, I should be looking in every day or so ... and I do great answers. :) Once again, welcome ... |
