One of the facts playing an important role for designating the final placement of the new telescope project was/is the rate of chances of having an earthquake.
Chile is a great competitor together with Spain and the U.S. because of its great night skies. But the recent earthquake (8.8 in the Richter scale)has shown in a very dramatic way that the best option might be La Palma, in Spain.
The commitee judging the final location of the telescope has to take a final decision very soon, I guess in mid March this year.
Let´s see what will happen next.

There are already many telescopes in Chile and I haven't heard of them being damaged by the quake. I believe they are not on the coast but high on the Andes. So I am unable to judge the relative merits of La Palma and Chile.

The Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica says that no quake damage has been registered in the Chile optical and radio telescopes. Only La Silla has suffered a blackout.

Grrrrr&*ç!#((?¿¡Ç}...........

Finally the telescope will be built in Atacama, Chile---->Chile arrebata a España el telescopio gigante europeo, que será instalado en el desierto.
Congratulations to the winner!
Finally the work will start the end of 2010 and the telescope will be operational in 2018.

 Extract of the article:
Armazones es una montaña de 3.060 metros de altura en la parte central
del Desierto de Atacama, en Chile, ubicada a unos 130 kilómetros al sur
de Antofagasta y a unos 20 kilómetros de Cerro Paranal, hogar del Very Large Telescope de ESO.

Armazones is a mountain with an elevation of 3060 m in the middle of the Atacama Desert, Chile,
about 130Km south of Antofagasta and about 20 Km from Cerro Paranal, home of the ESO´s Very Large Telescope.
I guess, the scientific data was essencial for taking the ultimate decission on where to place the telescope.
I am now in a trouble, because I lost a bet: if the telescope was finally built in Chile, I would visit
the telescope and take in situ some pictures and post them here!!! I think I will have to start saving some money for this right away!!!
Enhorabuena al pueblo chileno por este magnífico paso tecnológico.
