I was a classic user some time ago and just within the past several days came back to seti@home. I downloaded BOINC and seemed to get everything up and running no problem.

After looking at my results from BOINC though I've found that out of 109 tasks, 99 had a status of "Error while downloading" and now has any communication differed for another 21 some odd hours. Any thoughts on what could be causing this? I guess I'm really having a hard time understanding how to work BOINC, even though I'm sure it's a fairly simple program once you get the hang of it.

On a different note, I also see a lot of talk about overheating laptops. I'm using a laptop for this work as well. This computer, if I'm understanding my preferences correctly, should be be visible to all. Can someone recommend some processor settings that will prevent any heating issues?

Thanks in advance!

You should look at this link if you want to have your original joining date being shown in your account.

Perhaps setting of
Skip image file verification? yes
Check this ONLY if your Internet provider modifies image files (UMTS does this, for example).
Skipping verification reduces the security of BOINC.
in your Computing preferences can help avoiding the error, since it's always with seti_608.jpg.

The only computer shown at your account is this one. Are you sure to have used the right email address when attaching it?

I'm running laptops for SETI and Einstein at 100% CPU usage 24/7 without problems. Admittedly, those are not the newest models :-) but since I keep them dust-free, there's no overheating.

If you should have problems nonetheless, you could try external throttle programs like TThrottle or ThreadMaster from the BOINC add-on software page.

About my original join date... I don't remember any of my old account info or even my old team. It's all on my old computer which is on loan to a friend while I'm in Iraq...

I found the "image verification" box you mentioned but still have a communication deferment of over 13 hours. Is there any way to shorten this?

About the overheating issue, the computer you linked to is correct. I don't know enough about the amount of demand that BOINC puts on the computer to know if letting the program run full tilt is a good idea. Any thoughts?

You can always associate your Classic account later, no hurry.

You can shortn this by switching to the advanced view, the projects tab, click on the project, and click on update.

With the exception of some laptops, computers should be able to handle the load if kept dust free inside.

Hitting the update button has no effect on the counter for me. I click it, communicate with the server, and then the counter picks up where it left off. I hate to think that I could be doing something wrong considering that it's only a single button push but... Any more thoughts?

You'll have to wait the remaining time, since your daily quota is exceeded. I think JM7 just overlooked that fact.

BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced->Do network communications.

BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced->Do network communications.

But that still wouldn't shorten the "quota exceeded" time span.

No, it wouldn't. But it does restart the back-off time.
