Both Gliese 581 c and d are thought to be within the zone where life could thrive, neither too hot or too cold. c is near the inner edge of the zone, and d near the outer edge. The trend in thinking seems to be that d is likelier to have life, in some form. There is concern that an extreme greenhouse effect might exist on c, making the climate more like that of Venus, than Earth. Radio signals have been sent to this system, on the speculation that there might be intelligent life there. This was done once in 2008, and again within the last few days. I tend to think that life is likely in this system, due to the already known ability of life to thrive in almost any environment where it is at all possible. It's unclear how advanced that life might be. If it is advanced enough to use radio, and chooses to reply to the messages sent, we could hear from them in about 40 years. Michael
