OK I will start the war. How many guys have had their wife read a map to them while driving?
Ive found they can go North,East, and West but when it comes to reading a map while you are headed South they read it the wrong way.
And yes Ive turned the wrong way because of that.

In my experience anybody can be taught to read a map, but they have to want to be taught (as with most things). I told my wife she had to learn, because I will NEVER stop and ask for directions. Ever. So far it is working, but we have only been at it for 36 years.

(Side note sort of related to previous topics: a lot of women seem to have a hard time taking any instructions from men. I think this is because they feel they are being considered stupid when a man offers to help them. In fact, the man considers them ignorant - in the classical sense of the term - not stupid when they offer to help. The problem is probably compounded by typical male lack of sensitivity. I welcome corrections or other insights on this puzzling topic.)

I've also noted that people seem to fall into 2 categories. Those with good spatial imaging abilities (the ability to picture objects and their relationships in 3D, and from various angles) take quickly to map reading, 3D CAD design, wire harness and pipe routing, and navigation in general. The others (maybe 75% of the population in my experience) struggle with these concepts, but they can be taught.

A prime example is night sky star maps, usually printed mirror image from regular maps (north at the top, but west on the right and east on the left). When you first explain to people that this is because you want to picture the night sky viewed from below, whereas maps show the earth's surface viewed from above, about 25% of people say "oh, of course" while everybody else says "whaaat?".

Too true. It seems UPS/Fed Ex/any food delivery place uses GPS's to find my house and they always end up on the other side of my subdivision. Granted, my subdivision has a very confusing layout to the layman, but I thought GPS's were supposed to be able to get around all that.

Hand held GPS is only as good as the underlying map data, and some of that dates back a long time. I remeber the first time I used a portable GPS was in about 1989, standing on the shore of Lake Erie while the GPS showed us out in the middle of the lake. I'm sure I would have noticed if we were.

If one inputs garbage, one can expect garbage in the output (or something like that).

If asked before I was married, I would have asked for a new scope, a compound bow or fishing gear. I might have even considered a BBQ.

And yes i did give my wife some map reading classes. Told her amongst other things that when we head south you have to read it the other way.
As far as the GPS thingy, yeah they might be handy, but Im a luddite, I still use a compass and a map.
Orienteering i think they call it.

Looks to me like most of the people with an interest in SETI are smart enough to realize that points of view can be valid and/or interesting, even if you don't agree with them.

So, what's wrong with the rest of the world? How do we get them into this state of peaceful tolerance and coexistance? There's a war for you.
