I personally think that having to click Back twice (in IE6) is a minor inconvenience compared to the benefit. Also, default to On.

IMHO a useful feature would be to have a separator automatically added between the signature and post, some people have added separators in their signatures, some haven't. I find it annoying to read a post, be confused what the person mean, and then realise that some of the confusing pars was due to the signature, that in no way looks different or is separated from the rest of the post...

just a few ________ as a separator or something would make it quite clear that it's a signature or not. Other than that I think it's a nice forum :)

Janus - may a simple link at the bottom of the threads that takes one back to the forum (in this case a "Number crunching": next to the 'Return to STI@home main page" link.) Then it would be a one click "go back" instead of two "back" clicks.

I really like the auto jump feature. Nice work!

@ Janus: Uhh, when I logged in and left a couple posts I noticed that my signature was not being displayed. I went to my account and the signature was blank. Any ideas...? I re-inserted the text for my sig and alls well for now.

Agreed and noted =)

A few people got their signatures deleted due to the fix of the weird layout error a few days ago. This is unfortunate, however you can just insert it again and it should keep working now.
The problem was that the new dynamic signature system did not account for cases where signatures hit the max limit and got cut off (the old one didn't either, but there it did not end up in an error when someone posted). So the function that takes the signature you entered in your prefs and stores it in the DB has now been altered to fit the requirements more closely (max 250 chars). Since the database simply cut it off there was no way we could regenerate the remanining chars so we told the DB to delete all sigs that were max chars long.

I'm sorry I didn't post a message about it but I have been awfully busy elsewhere (the new features were not ment to be deployed here at all yet, they were ment to be alpha-tested as usual for a week or so...).

Janus, I've seen sites that use a javascript to show the number of characters in a text box. Any chance a character count can be added in the preferences? Makes it easier than counting each character manually. :)

I've also noticed that the signature preview does not consider the character return when previewing but the forums show it fine on a post. My signature as an example, the "---", [Enter], then the IMG tag (no <BR> tag).

Janus, i like autojump. Others do not.
To make Jump to first new post in thread automatically an option is obvious and therefor brilliant!
Better than this, you folks listen and respond. Fast! Well done.

Is the max 250 chars > or = to what it was before your changes? I'm not clear on that. I have run into the max chars in the past when adding to/changing my sig.

I hate to add to your burden, but I know you must keep a pad of paper and pencils and sharpener by your keyboard, right? In this day of broadband Internet access, I'm still running a trusty 56K modem. When I'm in the threads it takes forever to load all the messages, especially because of the graphics, when the number of messages gets over about 30 or so. I was wondering if it was possible to do with these as is done with our message lists in our account, where it only loads 20 and has a link to show the next 20, etc. I'm not sure how this would react with the "reply to's...." though. If it's a no go, no problem. With all the enhancements you have already done, I won't complain.

Noted - it will be fixed as one of the first things when I get the time as it is infact a bug.

It is 3 chars less than before

Already suggested at some earlier point, it is on my list.
Already there is a lot of things you can do to make the page load faster (display images as links and hide avatars).

Well, you can yourself help out to speed-up the forums by cutting down from 4 to only 1 stats-counter in your messages... ;)
To even further speed things up, stop posting any stats-counter and stop using an avatar. ;)

BTW, interestingly your posts in this thread is the only one that is showing any stats-counter at all. Since I've disabled showing of signatures this indicates you're not putting the stats-counters in your signature.
Having the stats-counters in your signature both automatically removes them then someone is answering your posts, and allows users with slow connection to disable signature/avatar to speed things up. This way you can still keep using 4 stats-counters and not slow down dialup-users uneccessary. :)

@janus
I was wondering if you could add auto update to the forum index pages? An interval of 3-5 minutes would be good for the refresh. That way I would not have to go over to my computer every once in a while to hit F5 to refresh the page to see if there are new posts to the forum. Thanx

Hmmmmm.... I had a feeling I would get a reply such as this.

I learned to count about 48 years ago and I counted 15 posts (not including my own) with stat-graphics.

As for the avatars, I can look at the avatar in a post and know who left the post.

I was not making a complaint about how slow the thread posts load because I'm using a 56K modem. I know and accept that it is going to be slow. I just believe that others, as my self, could have benefited from my suggestion to Janus without having to making the sacrifices you suggest.

EDIT: As an after thought, why have these type of features in forums if we should dasable them and not be able to enjoy them?

Try counting again, in this thread the only graphics that shows up if you've disabled sig-lines & avatars are your 4 stats-counters repeated in multiple posts, and 1 graphic in message #34902. ;)

Misinterpreted by me.

But, you moving the stats-counters to the sig-line there they really belong, like all other posters in this thread have done, shouldn't be a sacrifice. :)

BOLDED statements, made by me, does not constitute yelling on my part. They are made to differentiate between quoted text and what my statements are.

I do not have the features turned off and, once agin, I have counted 15 besides my own.

There is not enough space in the sig for the graphics URLs and my sig. It's limited to 250 chars. So I copy and paste them from my word processor.

Yes, I agree with you and enjoy them, but to enjoy the thread posts as originally entered I leave everything enabled.
