I recently installed the powerpc apple darwin boinc client 4.19 on an older G4 box which I have running OS X (10.2.8) and darwin 6.8. Don't ask-- I know it's an older version of OS X but it still runs really well as an Apache Web server!

Anyway, it seems to have attached itself without any complaints to the seti@home project, but no tasks have yet been retrieved. I'm wondering if SETI will still serve work to this older client?

It will, but there is/was a database problem that was being worked on, and work was extremely rare over the past 7-10 days.

Also, if at all possible, could you possibly use a more modern version of the BOINC client? We have found that a lot of the 4.x clients tend to have problems regarding credit claims (usually somewhere near zero instead of close to what it should be). Just a friendly request.

From past experience (I have an old 1GHz G4), don't even bother running SETI on it...you MIGHT get 75 credits a day...with the opt. app...

And since the minimum OS for BOINC is 10.3.9 and later for the 'newer' versions (like 5.10.45), you should probably upgrade the OS to do work...your 'wingmen' will appreciate it...

Well, I AM running the most recent version of BOINC on all my other my computers. I figured I'd make use of this older computer if it was capable. From what you're saying it sounds like it's really not worth it. thanks for the responses.

It's really up to you to judge whether it's worth it, don't let the enthusiasts here influence you too much.

The BoinStats S@H credits page shows an overall project RAC of slightly less than 52 million, and 264042 active hosts. That makes the average RAC per host less than 200. Considering the 10000 Top hosts have RACs ranging from over 32823 to just under 1009, the other end of the active hosts list must have many hosts slower than the G4 you attached. My 200 MHz Pentium MMX system has a RAC around 10, it has been crunching S@H since 1999 and will continue until it fails unless the project raises requirements it can't meet.

honestly I would monitor your returns from that machine. As stated the older BOINC versions had crediting problems. not only will you get 0 credits but your wingman might get 0 as well. If you see this happening to your WU's please upgrade your OS to run a modern version of boinc. I realize this is about the science not the credits but its not nice to drop 0's on people.

So far I know was there some problems in earlier the MacOS 10.0..10.2 releases with the math lib. The bug in the libm was imported by the BSD OS, and fixed with MacOS 10.3.
In the worst case there was invalid results. So, I recommend you to verify, if your 10.2.x systems would produce correct results.
