I know that these chips are very robust, but 84C? Is that normal on a 9800GT 512MB? usually with gaming I get to 80. Have never seen 84! Also, I've got a Phenom II 940 X4 @ 3Ghz just sitting here doing nothing. Can I not use the CPU and CUDA simultaneously? Thanks, and if these questions have been answered, I apologize. It's causing pain in my kidneys to see that quad core doing nothing right now. |

I know that these chips are very robust, but 84C? Is that normal on a 9800GT 512MB? usually with gaming I get to 80. Have never seen 84! Hi, My 8500GT gets up that hot sometimes when running CUDA, but usually runs in the high to mid 70's with the default fan settings. Even still when it gets to 84C I don't tend to worry about it, since the max on the card is 105C. I look at it as a cpu with a max temp of 65C, and I wouldn't get worried about it getting to 45C with the optimized apps I use. There are several threads on here though that suggest the 80's might be too high. Most of those appeared to be because of errors people were getting when CUDA first started here, and some still with a few problems recently as to one possible reason for the errors. Are you getting errors? Does the card always run around 85C when you're running the CUDA app? What is the normal temp at idle? Have you tried adjusting the fan speed to bring the temp down? Whwat drivers are you using for the video card? Have you tried cleaning out the case for dust and such? |

My 9600GT 512mb never goes above 52c even at full load. You will be assimilated...bunghole! |

...Also, I've got a Phenom II 940 X4 @ 3Ghz just sitting here doing nothing. Can I not use the CPU and CUDA simultaneously?... Not with MultiBeam (without tricking your preferences) and AstroPulse has run out of work (as does MB occasionally). So the best would be to attach to an additional project (I chose Einstein, but there are many others). Gruß, Gundolf Computer sind nicht alles im Leben. To get all the MB crunched using the gpu and the cpus you could try the AK V8 + CUDA MB AMD team work mod along with a cc_config.xml file. Also you should read about the app in the thread mentioned. |

Thanks for all of the responses! Allow me to address the questions first; 1. I'm not getting any errors. System seems quite stable. 2. The card idles around 73-74C, typically under load playing a 3d game I reach 80C. In regard to running CUDA, it's not always at 84C, it fluctuates between 80-84. 3. Fan speed already at maximum 4. I'm using the latest nvidia drivers; 181.22 released 01/22/2009 5. Case is super clean I did do some reading on various OC forums and gathered that load temps can reach these levels. Having said that, many people posted cooler temperatures, but the consensus was that thermal slowdown doesn't occur with this particular card until 100C, core melt beginning at 105C. Given that, I think I'm well within limits. In regard to the 9600GT running at 52c under load; that's really nice. I'd consider OC. Then again, that's G94 based and as such is a different animal from the G92 with different tolerances, expectations etc. Still, seems pretty cold to me. Byon + Gundalf: thanks for the tips, I'll look into that and using CPU for Einstein possibly. This machine is on 24/7, most of the time not being used unless I'm just surfing or rendering HD video. |

Gotta love water cooling! I have a BFG GTX280 H2O (comes with a water jacket) overclocked and running cuda it never gets above 42c |

From my experience (although a completely different setup), I would suggest trying to stay under 70c. My 2 8600s started having computation errors over 70, but bringing up the fan to 70% seemed to fix the problem. Why the fan was locked at 30% speed is beyond me though... |

Well, in looking around I found that up to 85C is ok for the 9800GT. The 8600 uses an entirely different chip (G84 or G86 or something) which has different tolerances, conduction, everything. It would be impossible for me to get this thing to 70C under load, especially considering that I'm idling at 73C with fan at 100% I did some investigating though and found that 80-85C is acceptable for this card, with thermal slowdown starting at 100C, and core melt beginning at 105C. My wife does have an 8600GT and she never gets above say 65C under load. Ahhh, that would be nice to have because then I'd overclock :) |

Hi Was curious how long ago you've tried the CUDA app. I was looking at your pc's and the only pc that shows recent activity and I don't see any CUDA tasks. If you were using a version of the CUDA app prior to 6.08, it could be that was the problem you were having, since those prior versions had bugs that had little to do with the temps of the cards. I noticed from an earlier post of yours that you've tried Raistmers app without much success at the time of the post, and was curious if you got it to work or the stock app 6.08 going and experienced those errors? |

Sorry, but you've raised my curiosity. I know you've been concerned about the temps of the card, but was curious if you have OC'd the card recently or in the past, and if so, what temps did it get up to, whether with CUDA or games? |

Nope, I've not overclocked the 9800. |

I have an MSI 9800 GT with 20% OC with stock cooler temp inside the case: 37C (Summer here, ambient 27 C) idle CPU temp: 44C idle GPU temp: 50C load CPU temp: 70C max load GPU temp: 65C max |

That's likely due to the MSI being clocked lower. Most of the MSI 9800 models has a 400mhz core clock while most other 9800GT are at 600+mhz. |

In fact, this model of MSI is "OC" so is already overclocked from MSI MSI OC stocks are 660MHz core and 950MHz mems...I have it runing at 740/1020 Standars 9800GT are 600/900 (i think) |

I have 2 XFX 9800gt (no sli when crunching) same versions , bought one from newegg other locally , the new egg one always ran 10-12c higher than the other one , no matter what fan speeds i set and what position the card was in (top or bottom pcie slot) so I eventually had enough with this , took the hsf fan of the card and cleaned and reapplied some artic silver to the gpu and put it back together. did it to both cards . now idle is 40-44 and load is 61-70(depends on ambient temp) I have manually set fans to 100 for both cards while crunching. using gpuz, harware monitor and nCPL to check temps and all are the same if your up to it maybe try to reapply the heatsink with some new clean paste if you are into something like that , seems that while the cards were being built the process varies on the "goo" application and it doesnt always seem to be as good as it should. oh , my ambient temps are 64-74 degrees f (i always keep the ac running) and when crunching i leave the side off of my box , the bad thing about the 9800gt is that it vents hot air to the inside of the case allowing that hot air to be sucked back in : thus if you have a tight case and the air flow isn't that great (i have a haf932 case and it still wasn't good enough) you will get alot higher temps than when gaming because seti is full load 100% of the time when games are not, for example same rig i can play ut3 all settings high and temps never get above 60 with fans at 50% and the case closed up , but with seti , the first time i tried it , the gpu went straight to 82 with the same exact fan settings , so i have learned to crank the fans full blast and take the side off while crunching , drops temps 15-20 c by doing this. hope this helps ya |
