I am newly returned to setiathome...one of the old classic users. I have attempted to move into the BOINC world before, but WITHOUT any success.
As far as I can tell, I have everything installed properly on my Mac, but I don't get a screensaver display of any sort...is this a characteristic of the present system or am I doing something wrong?

The old screen saver is gone, but when the Boinc program is in the foreground you can select view in the top bar to get useful information about the program. I think the theory is that driving all the pictures burns up many CPU cycles so instead they are trying to provide useful information about project status as a replacement for pretty pictures. If you are unhappy about the missing screen saver, you are not the only one, but the true goal of the project is to useful work with idle computers. If you want the pictures, you can go to simple view and click on the screen that says Graphics Available, but it will not function like the old style screen saver.
I run Grid View in order to keep track of the status and find the Message tab will tell you much about what is going on with the program but under normal conditions I leave Tasks selected as it gives the best overview of project status. Also if you come up in simple view, try clicking on Advanced view.
In any case, welcome back.

The screen saver is alive and well. You have to select it in the system preferences under the Apple menu.

So that's where it went. The truth is I blank my screen when not needed to make it last longer (I have a LCD and it helps extend the life of the light). With my monitor, it also reduces the power draw.

An LCD screen like the one i have only draws about 15 watts, and they last for years. The screen saver is very cool, its the main reason I run Seit. You can set it to blank after a set time if you want.

Mine draws about 45 watts when not in sleep mode. Because I got mine early in the game, I have an 18 inch NEC that cost over $600 new so when I installed it, I wanted to make sure it would last a long time. My system is running something my company needs to use so I leave the system on when I am on vacation but turn the monitor off so the UPS will stay up longer incase of power failure. Depending on the length of the vacation I may also take Boinc down to reduce the power more and in summer, to reduce the amount of heat produced.
I run SETI because while I know there is about one chance in a million that we will find life, but what a reward if we do. It may be the same reason why some people play the lotto.
