One of the difficulties facing long space travel is energy for propulsion ,Mankind will have to learn to tap one of the most abandoned sources of energy which is naturally occurring radiation i know one will suggest that we are already doing it with solarsail but that seems to be the list effective way to do it what we can do is try to tap energy by making a battery sort of , i believe from what i have read that when radiation encounters different elements it exertes different charges on the on the elements or compounds on earth these are small and difficult to measure because of neutrilization but in space its a different story .That means if we had to different elements one x gets positively charged by radiation will y more negatively charged by the same radiation if the to are separated by compartments we have a potential difference which we can use as electrical energy .i think mankind has to study the charges that are induced on different elements for anther reason and that is if you have two different elements in close proximity lets say a circut on space craft or spacecraft it self in a radiation zone and a potential difference builts then you have a lightening strike right in you computer or what ever so sooner or later these issue will have to be addressed and hopefully we shall then have our radiation tapping batteries .Somework has started on these effects i will paste here alink for the interested http://www.springerlink.com/content/w4j83722l2562757/

Hi, I read an article about solar energy, not by using 'solar-cell's ', but by using nano-antenna's to capture the light; X-Ray and radio freqent waves emitted by the sun.
These tiny antenna's are much more efficient then the conventional solar-cells.
Since light has a short wave-lenght, the antenna has to be very small, to be effective.
I will find the article and post it next time.

this is fairly good:

this one \/ may be slow, but it's vast & quite informative:

wonderful technology,
keeping the lights on,
thank you Fred
