hi there all,

i've bought a new Mainboard and cpu (q6600) for my pc, after the hardware i have the opensuse 11 LInux on my pc installed and started crunching with boinc.

Today i compared my crunch speed with other users/systems/cpus and i found out that my pc crunch much faster than a pc with q6600 and MS Vista onboard.
Somewhere else i saw that my pc crunch even faster than a xeon quad with the same speed (2.66 GHz).

Im really suprised, cause the difference it's significant i must add.

Opensuse 11 rocks !!!!!

If you don't believe me check my tasks to see it yourself.

bye

Hi petros, have been experimenting with Ubuntu 7.10 --> 8.04, (unfortunatly) the 32BIT version and didn't test it with an optimized app.
Do you use an opti-app right now.
Have to look for a download* off OpenSuSE 64BIT. And I'm NOT use to work with LINUX/UNIX, wich I think, is a pity, but one is never too old to learn, (I hope?)

*Is it free to download and do you know a WEBsite?
Like to give it a try. My fastest cruncher is an X9650, slightly OCed(3350MHz)running XP64+ OptiApp(AK-SSSE3x), but Windblows gives me a headache, sometimes, when 'it' reboots for NO apparent reason (again).

Heya petros,

Your computer is running the SSSE3x optimized application, and I bet a lot of the computers you compared it to are not running an optimized application. That's where the significant speed difference comes in. Other differences might be memory speed and timings, plus other BIOS settings. It wouldn't all be because of using Linux versus Windows.

Cruiser (AMD Phenom 2.3GHz quad core with SSE3 optimized applications) is significantly faster than another computer with the same CPU that doesn't run the optimized applications.

I apologize in advance for derailing the thread...

Fred - Unless your computer also randomly reboots when at stock speeds and voltages, it isn't "for no apparent reason." The reboots are a sign that your overclock isn't stable.

Hi, you are quit right, this never should happen, for no apparent reason!
And finally found, why, I've noticed that some MoBo's give memory problems in the range from 335 - 380 MHz, my ASUS P5E at least, so I switched from 10x338 to 9x 390(MHz)(FSB/DRAM=1/1)timings 4-5-5-5-13 2T and is now stable, also runs faster. A 11:30min WU, is now finished in <=10 minutes.
Timings have gone down, but the FSB:DRAM ratio, has gone down, too. 5:6 --> 1:1.
So DRAM runs at actually the same speed, but with better(lower) timings.
Next step, is to try >400MHz DRAM , ;)
Sorry to post this WINDOWS issue in the UNIX-LINUX forum!
I'am experimenting with LINUX, I like the Open Software [GNU] Concept.
