Oh, well... easy come, easy go. Hero status is such a fleeting thing.... (GRIN) So, Joseph, is your final avatar one you worked up, or Lab Rat's version of your avatar? I'll sent the image files this weekend. I'm tired, I just spent about 16 hours in the studio doing a product shot with a 4x5 inch view camera. It's not quite the same as doing snapshots with a 35mm or digital camera.

That's one of the good things about these message boards, if you have a problem, many people are willing to try to help you.

The actual time I spent converting the avatar was certainly less than an hour, I enjoyed it, and I learned something, too.

Janus, mine, too. Non-programmers don't understand. I understand starting with zero, base address plus displacement. At one time, I was more confortable working in hexadecimal than in decimal. I programmed in IBM's Assembly Language for most of the almost thirty years of my professional career in mainframe computers. As far as the color palette, 256 colors (range 0 thru 255, x'00' thru x'ff').

I'm certainly not going to rush you, this is all cosmetic, just "bells and whistles." Spend your time on the important stuff. You, Rom, Matt, and the rest are doing an excellent job, despite what others may say in their gripes and moans.

Cheers,

Stephen

Stephen, please do send those image files! I want to see the outcome of your work on this troublesome avatar of mine; and let me again thank you for your considerable information and time. Indeed, I used my own TIFF file and followed the steps Lab Rat outlined in his post's concluding paragraph.

I know this scenario deals with a cosmetic matter which pales in importance when compared to the over-arching purpose of SETI@Home, but it was quite frustrating to discover something so easily done elsewhere became so problematic here. I do appreciate the work done by those who actually operate SETI@Home, so please chalk my complaints up to frustration; yet, at the same time, it was a pleasure to discover how readily help was forthcoming.

Toby,

If you upload a PNG file don't worry about the 4K limit. I also tried cutting down on the number of colors to get to the 4K file limit size. But after doing some tests it appears file size does not matter as long as your picture is a 100 X 100 256 color PNG. I made this current avatar from the jpg file in you previous post. The PNG file that I uploaded had a size of 7.98 KB.

edit:
This avatar is from a pic I got from google images.

> bump

Colours on avatars has task item #1438 in the taskbase. Bumping this thread will not decrease the amount of time it takes to write the code - I will get to it eventually. You can keep track of what people are working on in the taskbase.
