Its on us normal people how things should work. Have you ever known anyone who thought of themselves as abnormal... ;) (The people with the money set the standards, but that hardly makes them the normal people.) It may not be 1984 but George Orwell sure did see the future . . . |

Hey America, nature gives the orders. I thought it was the people who have too much money and too much time on their hands that give the orders... ;) (Of course, it's always the rest of us who end up paying the price for their mistakes.) It may not be 1984 but George Orwell sure did see the future . . . |

I can see the changes starting here in the U.S.A. LOL. George Bush did that how? 'Big Business' bought the government how? Rising food prices can be squarely blamed on the actions and lobbyists of lefties like the kooks posting in here and their government interventionist policies espoused by people like Thorin. Don't forget the enviornmentalist 'Big Lobby' and their corrupt government subsidies of bio fuels. Sometimes I feel like I'm surrounded by.......other times I know it without a doubt. What will happen to Finland's NATO unmembership if Finland will be part of the "United States of Europe"? Here in Finland, we do not like NATO. We want to be militarily neutral. I think the only possibilities are that: a) Some countries of USE will not belong to NATO b) All the countires of USE will not belong to NATO c) No USE at all d) Some countries of Europe do not belong to USE Option e) All the countries of USE (including Finland) will belong to NATO is, of course, impossible. As discontent as I am with the thought of "USE", I'd rather vote for option b) I think it's better if the NATO dissolved totally. The Cold War has been over for almost 20 years now, there's no need anymore for such a pure military alliance under US-American leadership. If there were no NATO, at least no European country would be forced to be involved in wars started by the USA then - at least as long as Europe is not invaded. Account frozen... |

I for one have never been enamoured of the idea of a U.S.E.. The idea is ridiculous and will not be accepted by any of the current nations of Europe. All the nations value their own culture or, indeed, their multiplicity of cultures. NATO is an irrelevance in this anyway because that involves a far wider alliance, like it or not. The concept of political co-operation in Europe was designed to stop its members participating in the endless wars that have disgraced it for thousands of years. Since the Common Market was founded and, later, the European Union, none have fought against another. It is a bit ramshackle in many ways but far better than ANY alternative I have seen. There are fewer bureaucrats in Brussels than in the average English County Council. The EU does not - and never has - asked for uniformity of everything. That is just the sort of rubbish spouted by the Sun newspaper and the Little Englanders of the United Kingdom Independence Party and the lunatic fringe of the Conservatives. Of far more importance is the idea that no individual should be exploited or discrimated against. If Brussels wants better husbandry of animals on farms or in transport, the removal of poisons from food, the ability to ply one's trade across boundaries, the enjoyment and appreciation of cultures hitherto "foreign" and, above all, peace, then I am all for it. This most extraordinary international co-operation that the world has ever seen has been a staggering success. The Euro-zone in particular has grown ever richer to the benefit of its citizens. Those outside it are now feeling the pinch severely. I could go on for a good long time! However, please stop spouting drivel about alleged Brussels plans. Euromyth spreaders just keep on spreading needless untruths. Within the last few days the sceptics have droned on about supposed names for the various regions of Europe and suggested that the UK is going to disappear. Yet another out and out lie. Just because it appears in the Murdoch press or some conspiracy theorist's blog does not mean it is true. Precisely what "culture" or "birthright" do the septic sceptics mean anyway? Forward to peace and prosperity with Europe and the Euro ! |

To unite Europe to a single country will require single language. I don't think that anyone is willing to do that. The example is USA. Without common language, it would never survive as a union. Same for Russian Federation, China, India. |

I think it is quite possible for a united Europe to have a multitude of languages and cultures - it already works quite well, after all. The political differences are what really make matters difficult. |

I'll believe we have a 'United States of Europe' when we no longer have to carry around little red books from country to country to prove who we are. But I suspect that will never happen. They are too fond of red tape in Brussels to ever want to get rid of internal passports for EU Citizens. 'No one can make you inferior without your consent.' Eleanor Roosevelt. |

With a bit of luck that red tape will undo the Brussels bureaucrats in the next few days when Ireland constitutionally votes on the attempt at a new EU constitution. It appears from the reports on the polls that the NO campaign is taking flight. It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues |

The truth about the EU was apparently put forward in a speech by Peter Lilley a few days ago. Some 80 percent of our laws are now made by Brussels, and nearly all the little rules and regulations affecting our everyday lives are the result of EU directives, including fortnightly bin collections, and Home Improvement packs, as well as the closure of Post Offices up and down the land, to name but a few. The problem is, ministers have no powers to amend these directives or to say 'no' to them. The main problem for me is, if we are to have some kind of United States of Europe, I would feel more easier about it if we had some voting rights over who rules us in the European Parliament, as well as get rid of internal passports which would allow us to move around more freely within Europe, and scrap some of the absurd rules which seem to flow freely from Brussels without as much as a whimper from our own Parliamentarians. Instead of our freedom being increased, we are instead being stifled and bogged down by ever more regulations it seems, as well as increased 'security' to keep us all 'safe.' 'Hansard for Tuesday,' June 3rd, at 3.35 p.m. will provide details of Lilley's speech. Apparently this speech has been so little reported or made known to the public, the man must surely have been telling the truth. 'No one can make you inferior without your consent.' Eleanor Roosevelt. |

Mac Girl - you mentioned that Ministers were powerless to amend the Directives. At least that is the way they argue, when the UK is well known for embellishing, or gold plating, the laws enacting EC Directives. So, the truth is they are not powerless, but don't want to! I wonder what would happen if the UK refused to enact a Directive? We would be fined, but if we refused to pay the fine, what then? It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues |
