Message 685269 - Posted: 27 Nov 2007, 17:05:11 UTC

I've created a new team (last night, nearly 13 hours ago).

How often does SETI, and other projects, import team lists. I can't find my team with the search option.

Thanks for any help in advance

The team was created with another name, but for some reason I can't find it to join it with this name.

What is the name of your team, which you have created?

Team Page

You founded it on the BOINC wide teams page, not here.
I can't say how often that's imported in SETI, probably once a day or such.

That was the question. Would I be better off to create the team on each project my teammates plan to participate in to ensure they can join the team?

Good question, next question...

I really don't know how this is supposed to work with the BOINC wide team imports in existing projects with hundreds of thousands of teams.

a) not all (imho less than 50%) projects have this new feature implemented yet.
b) on those that have, an existing team should not be touched
c) on new projects you will now start with a team asap

Founding them direct should be the better solution imho.

Is there any way to pm to teamless members?

I tried to contact to some specific people but this forum pm is requiring member id number which unnecessarily complicates teaming movement.

You can use this page to seach for users : http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/user_search.php

And you may PM them, however with the Private Message Notification defaulted to OFF, they may or may not receive your message.

Good Luck! 8^D

Awesome glad we got that cleared up (not). I think I'll just create a team on every project that a member wants to participate in rather than wait for each project to import the info.

Sending team advertisements through Private Messages is not looked upon kindly by many users. I would suggest that you start a team recruitment thread instead.

Actually JM7, Many users don't mind at all. It's true some hate to get any type of PM or Email from someone they don't know but it is also true that some people ENJOY getting messages.

There is no rule preventing recruitment via email or PM. But you take your reputation in your own hands. Some will welcome your mails others will call you a spammer. There is simply no pleasing everyone.

I can honestly say that I (personally) have never received a complaint from a recipient about ANY emails I have sent on behalf of my team.

Team advertisements, i.e. mass posts, through electronic mailing systems like pm or email are just advertisements like any other advert as well. Nobody who didn't give you the explicit consent to send them this message has to endure such harassment.

PM was a feature clumsily implemented on this forum without asking the participants for their consent. Now, after some long time of asking for it, at least the accompanying email notification has been switched to "no" by default, so probably most users won't be bothered with this spam in their email postbox. As long as they don't go here too often, they will probably never ever even hear about this spam.

I know that there are some people that don't mind sending unwanted bulk mail to unsuspicious users, but imho spamming should be treated as hard as possible.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion, however what you call spam others call Personal Correspondence.

If members from different countries ask one other it is kind of meaningless, but if same countrymen ask one another it is fine. Maybe americans would consider that privacy annoyance something but there are many different cultures have different mentality. consider that.

I'm German, and I would not like to be spammed with 10K team adverts from all German teams.

I have the impression, that this liking of privacy is indeed a bit different in different countries, Americans seem to have a quite relaxed attitude towards unsolicited use of their private data, Europeans treat their privacy imho better.

I've read a good article about this in the Wikipedia about the Directive 95/46/EC on the protection of personal data:

The right to privacy is a highly developed area of law in Europe. All the member states of the European Union (EU) are also signatories of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). Article 8 of the ECHR provides a right to respect for one's "private and family life, his home and his correspondence," subject to certain restrictions. The European Court of Human Rights has given this article a very broad interpretation in its jurisprudence. In 1981 the Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data was negotiated within the Council of Europe. This convention obliges the signatories to enact legislation concerning the automatic processing of personal data, which many duly did.

It was about the proliferation of personal data to unauthorised persons (email addresses to others but founders), but you'll get the spirit.

Privacy is far more important than convenience, and of course the convenience of some random teams.
