2007 Donation Drive

Okay the Cat is out of the Bag (unofficially). Everyone is working on Grant Requests for the next year and we know that they have failed in the past. That does not mean they/we should stop trying. Many Seti Users and Other concerned individuals have been working to insure Seti is still alive.

Last November when I got a reply from Eric (at the beginning of the Donation push) "I will keep the doors open as long as I can." That scared the living daylights out of me. I pushed and kept pushing until Eric said we are out of the darkness for a bit!

While I and others have been the "poster children" for Seti, I now say that "we" together have a better chance. I hate it when I and others have to go to work to insure the information gets out. "WE" (Yes Everyone) now have a better chance to help. To help others understand and participate.

Over the last year "Collectively," You the Users have generated over $200000.00 Seti Dollars and a large portion of Hardware which Seti desperately needed. Thank You!

For Everyone that Found a Way to Donate something.

Thank You!

Now, who put the handwriting on the wall?

Slightly All the Time (Nov 07 2007)

Personally I know that November was the time for the push for Grants, composing the Budget and within the group that volunteered to help with the next Donation Push. Time to get ideas together... Eric Offered that those that wanted to help with should email him in time to get through his email filter... That request is still open (while it may be somewhat delayed at this point in time grant writing).

How can You Help?

* Team Captains, You can insure your active members know that Donations are needed. The more people that know the better, you now have a new team forum at Seti.
* Challenges from individuals to other individuals... The key would make it achievable!
* Hardware, there is still needed hardware. There are those that have access to large companies that could help that could write it off as a tax donation. You have to ask, find the person that can say yes or no...
* Matching Funds, for many companies if an employee can identify a tax deductible organization that the employees will donate to them they will match funds. Win, Win!
* Press releases, surely someone knows someone that we can make it more International.

More Ideas Are Better! The more people that are involved the better.

I and Seti are open to those Ideas. For the reference to that post Eric's annual post #7: SETI's little helpers, Sick Cat's and more proposals

My check is the mail (Good excuse most of time, but it is true). I have send an e-mail to Pete-Blurf regarding some out of the box suggestions( no answer yet). Also, if the auto deductions on a monthly basis would give us a green star, maybe more of us would consider this an option. I have been a fan of Mr Sagan since I first saw him on PBC and supported him. Up to this date, I have not been asked by Berkeley-e-mail to contribute. Something is broken.

Uli

Monthly donations "do count" for those that desire to display a star. If you sent them to Pete, I am sure that they will get to Eric.

So that you know, the "offical announcement" has not went out yet. This thread is/was designed to start people thinking about Donations.

In the last year around $206 thousand was raised which has carried Seti to this point. I am aware that Eric has some interestings things to say about what the community has accomplished during the last year.

Thank You Everyone!

Although I donate to SETI I also never got an email...but then again, as most users, I do not need an email to tell me of the need for donations to keep this fine project running.

Many things have happened during the course of the last year. Matt has placed small hints in the Tech News Thread about various items of Progress...

Eric is finishing the final touches on his review for the "Offical" kickoff...

For myself, I am working to ensure that as many people that can get the word will know what is happening.

This month’s drive seems to be going pretty well: more than 1400 donations totalling over $80,000 so far, and the table shows an unprecedented 0.3% of participants having donated over the past year. Encouraging to see, but we can do better!

The Default Link (as accessed through the front page) redirects to http://givetocal.berkeley.edu/makeagift/seti/
Disclaimers:

    1. This is a minor thing
    2. Anyone wanting to post the Donation link elsewhere have a 'current' link.
    3. Funding supports "Seti@Home's search for ET" (as seen in the description for this board).

Jeffrey

There is nothing to worry about as far as the redirect goes. UCB finance handles the money transactions. Because Seti pushes a bit of money through there is a special page setup for Seti.

http://givetocal.berkeley.edu/makeagift/seti/

in the middle of the page is the link for the department code for seti.

Make a Secure Gift to:
SETI@home

which is the link to the form.

Please note: in the form itself under the section of "Contact Information"

The default is dot is "Alumnus," you might want to move the dot to "Friend of Cal"

Note:
I would like to link to it but, it changes as they have a full time webmaster that changes things without notice then causing the Stars to not show up automatically here at Seti.

Regards

Al

$106566 has been raised or about 22% of the goal. Some of the items needed with this Donation push are a proper Server for NTPCKR. That will be the start of the true reporting of what everyone has worked for. A portion of the budget is to be able to afford another administrator so that things can move forward. To maintain basic operations costs.

If you have not donated yet please take a moment to consider a Donation. Visa Gift cards that you might have received for Christmas work well.

Thank You

Food for thought

The Operations Budget $268200
If I subtract the two items that have fallen off for the last two pushes...
Web site development $27700
Upgrade to failure tolerant server configuration $29300

That leaves; to just keep things running is about $211200 annually or $17600/month

So is the $29,300 akin to people wonder why we have had odd outages?
or $27700 to complain about web pages being slow to load?

Now as the Official request to get more users to handle the MultiBeam Data, as Richard points out. What kind of additional strain will that place on the system?

A portion of the budget is to get a 4th person in to help Matt, Eric and Jeff maintain the Seti System. Matt has already stated that his todo list is about one man year.

I would think about donating but I can see that when information is sent back to Seti by my computer almost 2 months ago and still not processed then maybe I should just delete the program and end my participation..... There are some less than a week ago processed but the others ones haven't been

David

Welcome to Seti BOINC

From Your statement there appears to be a problem that is a bit hard to define.
I think you are talking about pending credit.

While this is not really the place, Please ask your question.

Regards

Pappa

What most people do not think about, if you go and look at the Fall 2007 Budget you will see one thing that allows Seti to keep the doors open. That is the Operations section of the budget. It pays the basic wages, the electricity, the bandwidth, the office space etc. You can see where Matt basically stated that in Tech News "Spring Forward" (Mar 31 2008). Somehow with everyones efforts towards Donations (money and hardware) we have kept the doors open and somehow manged to get the Alfa receiver done in time to keep workunits flowing. Donated hardware has solved a lot of issues with enough parts to get NTPCKR started (hopefully Eric will have more information about that shortly).

That said, we still have a ways to go to just keep the doors open and hope alive. Currently $118254.78 has been raised or about 44% of the Operations budget.

Thank you for keeping the Doors Open.

Regards

Al

While progress for things like NTPCKR and Astropulse have been moving, it appears that Donations is a bit stalled.

Since the beginning of the Donation Drive (Nov 2007) only $$129,340.57 that is only about 27.2% of the $476000.00 goal.

If You Can, Please consider a Donation.

Please discuss over on the "Cafe" forum.

Take a look around the site. Lot's of feedback there.

Please note that these forums ARE the 'feedback'. Please ask your questions over on such as Cafe, Crunching, or the others as appropriate.
