I know it's apples and oranges, but I find my G5 tends to only need restarts with SETI when I need to install an Apple software upgrade. World Community grid sometimes hangs on console update, but SETI continues to run under those conditions. To clear that problem I just take Bionc down and restart it but no need to reboot or logoff.

You should be able to go for days and days. I have a couple mac minis that are core duos and I leave them on 24/7 for weeks at a time without restarts. Once in a while one of the cpu's will stop progressing and in that case I have found that about the only thing to do is restart.

I'm not running SETI on them now because I think there is a problem with the MAC app here at SETI.

Now that the question's answered, I would really like to know how hot does the 2.8GHz proc goes if left on a defaulted fan speed.

I have a 2.4GHz iMac crunching and the cores reached close to 70ºC on a defaulted fan speed at ambient 26ºC. With SMCFanControl running, I managed to bring it down to 54ºC.

[…] I think there is a problem with the MAC app here at SETI.

The stock v5.23 makes incorrect credit claims—and probably has a bug or two, because it’s being tested in the Beta project again—but I haven’t heard of any problems with Alex Kan’s optimized apps since he fixed the ‘weak similarity’ validation issue in the Intel version. All my Macs seem to be doing fine, anyway; YYMV.

BTW, it’s “Mac” (short for “Macintosh”). A “MAC” is the hard-wired ID number of a network interface, router, or similar device.

As Odysseus says - SETI is running fine on Macs when you use Alex's latest. I'm running stock SETI on an iMac G3 with 10.3.9, and Alex's SETI on my G4 iBook, G5 PowerMac Duo, and MacBookPro, all with 10.4.10 and have no problems. In fact, all my Macs run for weeks at times without a need for reboot.

My G4 and G5 run around 65° C and my MBP around 100°C.

hi id636779, i don't know if you have taken the plunge yet but i sure do like my new 24" imac. i've only been doing this for a couple of days and came across your post while trying to find out why my old ibook has litteraly shut down after trying to tweek the preferences on boinc, now i can't even start it (the ibook). i'm afraid i am going to have to initialize and reinstall os x and thus loose the one seti download it was working on.

any way, i took a image capture of the widget "istat", download from http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.htmlwhich is a neet widget that monitors the cpu, memory, disks, network, uptime, temps, fans and processes. since i can't figure out how to past the picture into this reply i'll just say i'm going on to 12 hours now after rebooting from windows for a while. i love this machine, i use boot camp to go from one os to the other. so far i have switched back and forth between the two systems several times and everything is ok. the way it is crunching thru the projects i don't think you need to worry about restarting........or not.

but then again, i'm a newbee and i'm most likely going to learn everything the hard way with this program. (boinc and seti@ home)
