and boy is there a pile of work on my desk. I need to get some stuff together for a press release on multi-beam SETI@home and AstroPulse. I've got about 6K emails that have made it through my spam filter, I need to digest some reviewer reports on some proposals, I need to figure out why some people haven't gotten receipts for their donations, I need to do some editing on Kevin's SETHI paper, and start planning for frequency switching in future versions of the SETI@home application. On top of it all, Kevin is gone, as you are aware.

Vacation was enjoyable. Spent a bit more than a week here followed by a week here in order to attend an event here with 165,000 friends.

Anyway, I'm back at my desk, and since Kevin is gone and undoubtedly busy with his teaching schedule, it's up to me to post more often in this forum. Therefore, I'll make shorter posts... Like this one. ;)

Is 'Thunder Valley' awesome or what.
Most folks don't realise that there are a lot of us 'Geeks'
who are also into NASCAR.
If they were paying attention, they would understand that more than
any other sport, football, baseball et al, Team Work and communicating
effectively is what makes a winning team in NASCAR.
There ability to share ideas and measure without fancy sensors and
computers and stuff in the cars like F1, INDY.
These guys are masters of scientific reasoning and design of experiments
which are thought to be the exclusive realm of scientists.

Anyway, made the Bristol Pilgrimage 4 times from here in Boston.
Been to Daytona, Saw the last Rockingham and N. Wilksboro.
The first Texas, California, Las Vegas and Brickyard.
Also been to all the NH races. Been to Pocono ( Awfull place ),
Darlington ( Good place ) and Talledega ( Second in greatness to Bristol ).

Glad you had a good time. Maybe one day you can stay with the wife and I for
one of the NHIS Races. I have 6 tix available of the eight I own. Two are YOURS for the asking - Gratis. Just call.

It is at that. Loud and fast. Never been to a short track before. Unless you want to count dirt tracks like the one here (barely visible). Of course that's not NASCAR. Just local stock car racing.

NASCAR, and essentially all professional auto racing, is all about the team. We rented one of the FanView boxes with a couple head sets so my nephew and I could listen in and see the car camera views. His favorite driver is Jeff Gordon, so we spent most of the time listening to him. Sounded to me like he could have finished in much better position if he had been satisfied with the car that was moving him steadily ahead of the pack. He complained about the handling and the pit adjustments made to solve that ended up slowing him down. Well, that's part of the team work, with the pit crew needing to turn statements like "f%$^&*g goes to s%#t on the straights" into adjustments of the weight distribution over the tires.

Of course then there is both cooperation and competition between cars on the same team which livens things up quite a bit.

Which isn't to say I don't enjoy indy car or formula one racing. In those sports the emphasis is more on the design of the car and the technology it contains, so things are quite different.

I may have to take you up on that. Thanks!

Eric

I am a long-time SETI participant. If you have anything to do with keeping your equipment "up", I suggest you and your staff devote 200% of your time to that task. I am getting ready to establish multiple PC's to help the SETI effort. If I keep seeing "BOINC is Idle" messages, I am afraid I won't put in that effort.
It seems you people were alot more serious about this project in the pre-BOINC era. That is my perception from the outside. You and your staff maybe should take servicing the server farm more seriously...or get all the idle semiconductor facilities in Silicon Vally to donate equipment. One way or another, in my opinion, you need to m a n a g e the project !

Hey Eric,

Glad you had a nice vacation. I didn't get to make it down to the lab last month, wound up having car problems that almost stranded me in Sacramento. LOL I don't have to be back down that way till February, so when it gets closer to that time, I'll bug either you or Matt or someone.

Also, any kind of timeline for an updated donation list from you guys? Or is that still being put together?

@John Comeau,

If you've read the Tech News section of the message forums here, you'll see that they are currently having problems with Hard Drives failing, and many other ailments that are causing problems. These guys are and have devoted a whole lot more than 200% to the project. These guys have come in on weekends, holidays, middle of the night, just to try and keep things working. They work on a shoestring budget. Also, just as with any BOINC project, they do not promise 100% uptime either, its been recommended till people are blue in the face to have a backup project in case your favorite one doesn't have work. Its either that, or go idle.

With that, remember to donate as well. You could use some of that cash to help the guys at UCB purchase newer equipment. Unfortunately, for a volunteer project, it still needs money for all the backend stuff that we don't ever really hear about.

Anyway, CRUNCH ON!!!!

Hi Steve,

Can't make this one, unfortunately. :( The budget is pretty much busted until the new year not to mention that I'm not feeling I can leave town any time soon. At least not until the immediate work is done. (There's a bunch of torch carrying villagers outside the door. MacOS/PowerPC users from the looks of them. A few x86_64 Linux folks mixed in, I guess.) I do appreciate the offer. though!

There's gotta be some setizen out there who wants the NASCAR experience...

Thanks again.

Eric

Knightmare, Buga1, and I in the Calm Chaos team that are participating in several NASCAR fantasy leagues.

ESPN's Stock Car Challenge game is starting a new segment this week at Loudon, if either of you (or anyone else) are interested in joining up, just PM me and I will send you the links.

You don't have to join our BOINC team to participate, just looking for fresh blood in the league. ;)
