The largest factorial that will fit into scientific notation with 3 digits in the exponent is 449!

Pie is good. I especially like apple or apricot. So you can have some if you want. Just leave some for my girlfriend. :)

I asked about if it was correct as I saw a reference that some calculations performed by this program are actually "wrong" or inaccurate to a certain degree. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calculator_%28Windows%29 and scroll to the bottom and read under the section labelled External Links.

Yes, I see.

EEK! That's scary! Having now become reliant on computer calculators, we're now not sure when they're right! Good point.

I think we'd have to do some googling on mathematical/university sites to see what they say the correct figure is. ;)

666:

666: is the number of the Devil. If you look closely, you will see that there is never any post in any thread numbered 666 on Cafe Seti. The numbering goes to 665, then jumps to 667.

Question: Is that because the mods have been ordered to remove all 666 post numbers from the thread? Or, is this an administrative "fix" to keep the forums "Kid Friendly"? Or...is this some kind of religious cabal foisted on the forums by the Da Vinci Code guardians?

EEK!

Oh, really?

The French elections were held today. Le Figaro is reporting that the UMP Party is doing very well. They're the dark blue on the map below. I don't really know much about French politics, though. :(

The story headline on the right there says, "Frenchmen wanted to accord the Left the status of Opposition". So, I'm guessing the winning UMP Party is a Right-Central party.

Edit: Ahhh! The Globe and Mail reports, "PARIS — French President Nicolas Sarkozy's allies won a large majority in parliamentary elections on Sunday but fell short of the predicted landslide."

Well, isn't that special? ;)

I hope that wasn't too much work.

Is there any mathematical proof the the value of Pi has an infinite number of decimal places?

Heyas Chris!

It seems that has been proven, sort of... ;)

According to Wikipedia:

Numerical value
The numerical value of π truncated to 50 decimal places is:

3.14159 26535 89793 23846 26433 83279 50288 41971 69399 37510
See the links below and those at sequence A000796 in OEIS for more digits.

While the value of pi has been computed to billions of digits, practical science and engineering will rarely require more than 10 decimal places. As an example, computing the circumference of the Earth's equator from its radius using only 10 decimal places of pi yields an error of less than 0.2 millimeters. The exact value of π has an infinite decimal expansion: its decimal expansion never ends and does not repeat, since π is an irrational number (and indeed, a transcendental number). This infinite sequence of digits has fascinated mathematicians and laymen alike, and much effort over the last few centuries has been put into computing more digits and investigating the number's properties. Despite much analytical work, and supercomputer calculations that have determined over 1 trillion digits of π, no simple pattern in the digits has ever been found. Digits of π are available on many web pages, and there is software for calculating π to billions of digits on any personal computer. See history of numerical approximations of π.

All they seem to have in Windows character sets is Π, a Plain Jane stripped-down version of the traditional.
