- xml export not updated
- stats pages here not updated
- SETI@home server status information: most numbers are old

Individual stats via account information are OK.

All was OK few days after Thumper took vacations, so it might be just some
hanging/killed script somewhere?

Click on "Your Account" at the top of the page, go to "General Preferences" and click "View or Edit". Depending on where you have your computer at, you need to click "Edit" under either "Default", "Home", "Work", or "School", then change the setting listed as "Connect to network about every
(maximum 10 days)", to a value of your choice.

......

I think we should instead look for this setting:
"Cache enough work for an additional ... days"
"(maximum 10 days; requires 5.10+ client)"

See the word "Cache"?

That setting is currently not working since we do not have the 5.10 client yet.
So go with the connect toggle instead.

If you haven't read the front page news, Sun is coming through with a replacement science database server (yay!) which will be arriving Monday afternoon.

Jens - Not trying to be rude, but have you read any of the posts the past few days about the issue with the database server? IF everything goes right, the tech guys (and gals) will receive the new server sometime Monday according to what was posted before. They will then perform their magic, and at some point work units will start flowing. Sit back, enjoy the weekend

The reporting of results has been slow though. Not sure why. Looks like there would be less and less as times goes on.

I know you guys currently run on MySQL, but if you ever want to switch it over to Oracle, let me know. I'm a professional DBA with experience on Oracle. Oracle Corp can probably give you a free license since you are "non-profit", and I can help migrate all the data over to it. An Oracle database can provide a much more robust backup and recovery strategy, performance throughput, etc. Just a thought. Just trying to help anyway I can.

Actually, our science database is on Informix. Our friend at Intel has suggested a change to Oracle (because he spends his time designing database solutions). One issue (other than cost, although a free license sounds good) would be porting our science DB code to Oracle (API, Informix specific code, Additional support code) If you know someone who could volunteer to do it, it might help.

The other issue would be getting us up to speed in administering Oracle.

Actually, the point I was making (and it still appears to apply) is that, notwithstanding the position taken regarding the ability to report work is functioning exactly as it always has, that side of the project HAS been problematic at best for this past week -- lots of 'report failed' efforts. SOME (this means NOT ALL) of the work reports get thru SOME (this means NOT ALL) of the time. My suspicion is that as folks are hitting the server for non-existant new work (folks who are aleart to the general problem have configured for no new work), it creates quite a traffic jam at the server (which is also handling the upload reports).

THAT is the query I had -- pushing out deadlines by say 5 days or a week seems a very reasonable approach for those (like me and I am SURE there are others) that ARE encountering failed uploads.

For some reason, this line of reasoning is either being missed or rejected out of hand as not having any validity.

BarryAZ asked a question about deadline extensions.

Matt previously addressed this issue. He said that no extensions are expected to be made because there is no reason not to upload and report your completed results now. That part of SETI and BOINC is still and has been working. The only outage is the ability to download new work units, although the reporting part can at times be difficult and may require multiple retries. You are urged to upload and report all your completed work units now.

Hi, BarryAZ. Thanks for your well-reasoned response. I now have to agree with you that a deadline extension may well be warranted, since there is a continuing problem with the reporting. And since the status page seems stuck, no one knows what is really going on.

Now all that has to happen is to get Matt and/or Eric to agree (and actually have time to do it). (Not that *my* opinion counts in the least.)

as a very non tech person, what else does Sun do..I mean how can we support them, perhaps a link so that we can at least consider them as we contemplate new purchases...is this possible...and well done team...you've only got the whole world waiting, to say nothing of the universe!!
