Mr. Korpela, I have asked this before in "number crunching" with no respones. I am asking you as a last resort...I am running a quad core processor. I do not want it to run 4-cores 100% of the time. I have changed "my preferences" a number of times in "seti" and nothing changes. To keep the core temps down, other wise known as theta j A, two cores need to run 50% of the time. I have that in my preferences now. They have been that way for one month, and the software does not pick it up. If I am doing something wrong, it sure would be nice to hear from someone. Please advise.

For your high junction temperature "theta j A" (and the "theta" bit is what?), perhaps you should look at lowering the source-to-sink delta T.

'tis far better to treat the problem rather than ameliorate the symptoms.

(Seat your heatsink better, use a better heatsink, or otherwise improve the cooling. CPUs are designed to run 100% 24/7.)

Also note that you must click on 'update' for your host to pick up any web settings changes that you have made.

Running at the higher CPU frequency will give the results faster.

Yes, eventually.

The analysis done now will be compared against other results. Then, a telescope will look for any suggested signals. Then, hopefully, we will find something.

I'm sorry to use this forum but after searching for 20 minutes, I have no idea how to ask a silly question. I have been doing seti computing on my home pc for ten years but I do not use nor know how to use any of these tools.

My problem which arose in the past week or two is that I now receive impossibly large work units. I had one work unit which looked like it was going to use 150 hours of CPU. I managed to suspend other work and thought I was getting close (121 hours) when the 'to completion' number jumped to 196 hours. and the % completion went to 2%. There is no way my humble PC is going to do 6000 hour work units!

The work unit is question is

astro pulse 4.36 ap_06oc08ab_b0_p1_0277_20081028_3129.wu_0

So, is there some way I can continue to participate either by restricting work by cpu time or project or should I just drop out?

This was posted in an earlier thread that pertains to the type of task you're running now.

There was also this posted about the problem I think your AP task had.

There is a rare bug present in both the v4 and v5 stock applications, and the original opti application, which can cause a task to restart processing from the very beginning. That bug has been eliminated from the latest v5.00 optimised application (and the updated v4 opti released alongside it), but has not yet made it back into the stock application despite the code been brought to the attention of the Berkeley developers before release

You can go to your SETI@home preferences to opt out of doing AP if you'd like. Under "Run only the selected applications" set "Astropulse" to no and under "If no work for selected applications is available, accept work from other applications?" set that to no as well. Doing this you will only recieve the regular Multi Beam task that you're probably use to getting.

Questions along these lines are usually asked in the Number crunching forum for future reference.

The WUs are chunks of radio reception time from the Arecibo radio telescope. Your computer then looks for anything in there that might indicate a "non-natural" signal that then might indicate ET. The 'screensaver' shows the Fast-Fourier Transform results used to sift through the signal.
