I have a task that is for more than hours, it is due on 01/26/2011, and I don't think I am going to be able to meet the deadline. Do I need to abort that task so it can be loaded to my other computer which is on 8 hours daily? What do you suggest? Thank you. |

Howdy Fellow-Earthlings... I have some serious concerns about certain matters and I need to know in all truthfulness just exactly how secure is my computer's link to Seti@home. There have been a couple of strange goings on which give me reason to believe there may be a couple of smart arses out there among the participants. I'd appreciate a Private Message response thankyou. |

did you ever get your reply cos a few stange things have happened to my computer as well shortley after i posted my first post on the message board (it was to johnny guiness but i dont think for one minute it is him just somebody reading posts and having a go i made the mistake i think of saying i was new to the internet i really hope i am putting 2&2 together and making 96 but i think it is too much of a coincedence and i think everybody should be aware)i wouldn't call them smart arses but if i called them what i wanted to my post would certainly be MODERATED or deleted |

I haven't seen anything. But I don't know what you are talking about. I suppose it is possible that there is an undetected data breach. Overall Seti@home is secure, can't say the same for all BOINC projects. If it is just weird or inappropriate PM's there is a red X button for a PM. |

<danger> Just thinking, Now might be a real good time for Eric to call a press conference to announce that SETI@Home is still searching (and would like your donation). A press release at least (prnewswire?) |

Can someone point to where i can read, what it is we are supposed to be looking for in the task results Is this an average or interesting result ? Spike count: 0 Pulse count: 1 Triplet count: 1 Gaussian count: 0 Would it be more interseting if the Pulse showed 2 and Triplet 5 ?? |

Hi, My name is Tim. I just recently became a seti@home member and think it is a wonderful idea. I have started running it on my laptop full time as I only use it for emergancy and travel reasons. I love being a part of this....With that said, "What next"....how would I know if a signal was detected and what would I do if I was so lucky? My email address is tfowler111@yahoo.com Thanks for your help in this matter.....T. |

Several interesting signals have been found in the results we return. The process right now is to crunch the data and store the "interesting" signals in the Master Science Database to be re-observed. If a signal is found to be coming from a specific location and it turns out that it's extraterrestrial in nature, the signal would have to be verified by other scientists as to its origins. At that point, the project will contact all users who "crunched" that workunit and give them credit for finding ET. Until then, we're just analyzing data recorded from space coming from light years away. A single signal in a single workunit may not be that interesting and thus isn't cause for celebration or an alert to the media. [Edit] I would also strongly recommend removing your email address from your posting. There are programs created called "spambots" that crawl the internet looking for email addresses and adds them to email spam lists. So unless you like to hear about all sorts of "enhancement" products, never give your email out publicly on the internet. |

Earlier, when the BOINC manager was upgraded the columns were arranged. The new first column labeled Notice appeared. I know the machines don't send or receive work units during regular intervals. The Notice column isn't used very much. When work units aren't be sent or received, the first thing is go to the Notice column. I not you guys may not think of adding notices when the alligators are on the loose, but I forget when the regular down times are. Can I get you to add a notice that will remind me of the regular down times. And maybe start using this volume more. Loyal user |

How do I get more than 4 bits of data to process. I have a 4 core machine and that means the CPU only operates until the 5 hours, or even 1 hour, has passed. That means time wasted because I have to keep on getting data, like every 5 hours of so, and I might not be here. How do I get 20 AP hunks of data or 40 Seti things so that i can just let it run like forever. MaxG |

How do I get more than 4 bits of data to process. I have a 4 core machine and In your Computing preferences under "Network usage" you'll see "Maintain enough tasks to keep busy for at least (max 10 Days)" I set this to 4 days and under that is "..and up to an additional" which I also set to 4 days so this gives me 4 to 8 days of work on hand but if you have any further questions please ask them in the Number crunching forum where you'll get quicker answers. ;) Cheers. |
