If he looked these up rather than went with his opinions, then, I hate to tell you R/B, but that makes it hard to call his definitions "wrong."
Looking to science and mathematics, definitions are evolving and agreed upon socially. Examples may be posted later.
Put your winkys away...
Your definitions are wrong and incomplete.
You defining these 2 vastly differing schools of ethos in such a way is short sighted at best and devious at worst. Such a quipped definition of these terms might be likened to a physicist being asked what an electron is..
"it's a negatively charged particle"
A wholly insufficient and even misleading answer.
Altruism is [snip]

Altruism:
Regard for others, both natural and moral; devotion to the interests of others; brotherly kindness; -- opposed to egoism or selfishness. -- The quality of unselfish concern for the welfare of others.
Egoism:
Excessive love and thought of self; the habit of regarding one's self as the center of every interest; selfishness; -- opposed to altruism.

Sarge....

There's a reason why the Oxford Philosophic Dictionary has an enormous girth. Looking up terms in Webster's is useless when people are trying to discuss deeply thought out ideas and theory.

What takes 1,000 pages in a proper philosophic dictionary is about what the ENTIRE standard english dictionary consists of, sir.

He set up a straw man TROLL bait.......sorry.

Don't feed the trolls.

This thread remind me of the days of yore when, it is said, philosophers and theologians would spend vast amounts of time arguing over how many angels could dance on the head of a pin.
In this thread we have endless arguing over semantics.
Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.

We wouldn't want to bring any established absolutes into a mind-meld of overly educated yet obviously ignorant people... ;)

Neither angel nor devil: agnostic (okay, okay, atheist). So, according to the religious folk, horns might apply...:)

That cinches it. Speaking as a certified authority on Angelhood...this is now deemed an official statement of fact.

She's angelic. I said it. That settles it. Carry on.

Given Jeffrey's interests, it might be appropriate for him to read your 1000 pages that go solely into the definitions of altruism and egoism.
When it comes down to it, most people do not have the time for it, but there's another good reason: definitions should be reasonably short, to capture the essential meaning of something and to set boundaries on things; this thing is x, this other thing is not x.
BTW, an example of evolving definitions is that of what is a planet. Personally, I think it is a joke that people would protest that Pluto has been demoted to a dwarf planet. The only thing worth debating is the definition that has now been chosen for a planet and whether it meets the standard of other good definitions. A definition is not for making your favorite Disney character ... er, planet ... retain its status.

This is more rationalizations.

Of course definitions are supposed to boil down the essence of an idea or object. Who disputes that? However using BAD or false definitions to set up STRAW MAN arguments is wrong, dishonest, and immoral.

If you'd like to know what brand of egoism I believe in then just ask. Consulting Webster's dictionary just doesn't cut it. Just as if I knew absolutely nothing about astronomy and looked that up in a dictionary and reading that it is 'the study of the heavens' or some such would not make me an expert or even a well educated layman on the topic.

I read the other day that here in Germany the majority does not know anymore (and don't care either) the meaning of the Ascension Day.
Unfortunately it's unofficially called the "Father's Day" here, and it became an awful tradition for the male part of the population to stroll around and celebrate this day drinking like hell.
