I have been running ubuntu linux for over a year, and I *am* able to run the screensaver. I'm not sure what could be wrong in your case, please provide more information.

As a possible quick-fix, I would suggest a reinstallation of the latest version of boinc for linux.

In the options "System", "Preferences", "Screensaver" there is no BOINC option. So how do I set BOINC to be the default screensaver???

I have the same question. I used the "universe" package to install but no option for the screen saver.
