I have a single P4 3.0 GHz processor and the allocation of resources to Seti /boinc projects is siting fixed on 50%. I have set the preferences to 85% max and have updated boinc for meach of 2 projects I am running. I have trwld through the questions and answers but can't seem to find any limiting factors. CPU is running cold and fan is at 1/3 speed.

Hello Mark,

You are attached to 2 projects at can be seen at BoincStats and your are using a HT CPU (2 virtual processors).
For a HT CPU, if Boinc has only 1 WU to process, which you can see under the tab "Tasks" in Boinc Manager, your CPU will use only 50% of its power.
If you have 2 or more WU’s from 1 or several projects, then your CPU will use 100% of its power.
In order to increase your number of WU's you can go to

"Your account"

--> "Preferences"

--> "View or edit general preferences"

--> hit the "edit preferences"

which brings you here

There, in "Network usage", change the "Connect to network about every xx days" to some 0.5 or 1.0 days and hit the "update preferences" button.
After that, in Boinc Manager, go to the tab "Projects", select Seti@Home and use the button "Update" to bring the new value over to your host. Keep an eye on the tab "Messages" after clicking the update button to be sure the new value is brought over.

By doing this, you can manage how much WU's are downloaded. You will need to select the other project as well and hit also here the "Update" button in the Boinc Manager after having selected the other project in order to bring this new value over to the other project.

After doing that, Boinc Manager will ask for more work for both projects.

You can repeat this sequence as long as you want. Keep in mind the WU's have a specific deadline for each project in order to get credit.

Thierry

Thanks for the assistance

I had about6 tasks backed up in the tasks tab. I assume WU is work units/ tasks??. My machine is only working on one at any one time even with 5 in the tasks bar. I am happy to run the computer as a single CPU is it possible to run one virtual CPU rather than 2 if this helps the cause?

As a test
I have deleted all tasks and asked for new work "Update" from the projects I am connected to seti@home does not send anything spinhenge@home sends 4-5 tasks but only starts work on 1 at a time again at 50%??

Yes, you can run a single CPU, but since this is half your computing power, it will appear as 50% (2 virtual CPUs, one busy = 50% total computing power used).

If you want to use more power, you'll have to allow BOINC to use the second virtual CPU.

Can you help me set up so the second virtual CPU is used? I have the CPU able to use upto 95% of CPU capacity. again only 50% used

increase the 'time to connect' setting under your account, general preferences.
This will increase the cache size of give you more units, more units means both cpus, on e real and one virtual in your case, will have work. I have mine set at 4 or 6 days depending on whether I have the machine set for home or school or office.

Found the problem seting for multiple CPUs set to one. set this to two allows both Virtual and actual CPU run?? Too Obvious

Click on "Your Account" at the top of this web page, then click on "View or Edit General Preferences", check the line that reads "On Multiprocessors, use at most" and make sure it is set to 2 or higher. If not, click on "Edit Preferences" at the bottom of the page, change the number for that setting to 2 or higher, save settings.

Then, open BOINC Manager on your computer, click on the Projects tab, select SETI@Home project, then click on the button to the left that reads "Update".

You should be using both CPUs now.
