Hi. I'm a newbie. And I can't find the answer to this. In my preferences I have set the "Do work while computer is in use?" option to no and the "Do work only after computer is idle for" to 3 minutes. However. This doesn't sem to work. Because no matter how much I use my computer BOINC is alwasy running in the background and using my CPU to a 100%. As soon as I pause the active programs my CPU drops to about 10%. How can I prevent this??? I want my computer to be all mine when i'm using it and all BOINC's when I'm not. Version: BOINC Manager 5.4.9 Project: SETI@Home / M |

Did you update your preferences locally? To do this, open BOINC Manager, select the Projects tab, then select any project (such as SETI@Home), then click on the Update button to the left. This will force BOINC to download any preferences you may have changed from the servers. |

You need to make sure the setting under Activity is set to "Run Based On Preferences". ![]() My movie https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/502242 |

When I hit "update" in the projects tab it returns "communication deferred 10:00" and starts a count down. Is this the way it should be? I have however been able to update my graphics so i think my settings have been updated locally. / m |

Hmm.. I've set my activity to run based on preferences. That's good. I forgot to suggest that as well. But it must retrieve any preference changes you make online from the servers and save it locally on your computer. Basically it must download your new set of preferences to each computer attached to your account. When I hit "update" in the projects tab it returns "communication deferred 10:00" and starts a count down. Is this the way it should be? This happens from time to time, usually when the servers are down for maintenance or when the request times out. You can simply let it retry itself or manually try again later (if the time delay is in the couple days range). I have however been able to update my graphics so i think my settings have been updated locally. I'm unclear as to what you mean by "able to update my graphics". Do you mean you've updated your graphics driver? Or do you mean you were able to change your screen saver? Or do you mean you changed a BOINC preference online that had to do with graphics and it took to the change already? If it was the former two questions, those actions have nothing to do with the BOINC preferences. If it was the latter, then yes, your computer has already downloaded the latest preferences and something else is amiss. Perhaps try increasing the time from 3 minutes to maybe 5 or 10 and see if that changes anything. Don't forget, if you're simply browsing the web and reading web pages, three minutes can pass quickly without moving the mouse and can therefore trigger SETI to run while you're still "using" your computer. Increasing it a little bit might solve your problem, assuming you don't read a long web article (like I sometimes do) and over ten minutes pass! ;) |
